From what I have seen of the insides of E-Machines, I would have a hard time recommending them. They seem to use the cheapest components available. This was on computers a couple of years old, maybe they have improved. The other ones you mention I am not familiar with.

Nothing beats www.alienware.com. www.falcon-nw.com is another good one.

Most of the eMachines I've come across in the past few years (at least the ones that use Intel CPUs) use Intel mobos. The one he's looking at

    http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=315883&pfp=srch1

doesn't look too shabby off the blocks. It's an older (nForce2) chipset though. It's also an AthlonXP 3200+ so there's probably not much room to upgrade. On one hand it's got an AGP slot, but the DVD burner is only SL. I'd keep looking though. I see lots of deals on DELLs on slickdeals and techbargains all the time.
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore.

Something tells me that most people looking at a $299 eMachines at CompUSA aren't looking to plunk down Alienware or Falcon money.

He did ask for the BEST...

AlienWare are great, as are BOXX Technologies http://www.boxxtech.com/products/products_new.asp

Both overpriced, but very nice machines.

Just build it yourself — if you can afford it.

That's my advice: you can control the quality of parts, and all parts should have a decent warranty too -- something computer builders might not offer you.

both good though from seeing both in person I think I'd go with the Falcon NW one myself.

Keep in mind that they will cost WAY more then you can do it almost exactly the same.

I checked out that ibuypower.com website before. They seem to have some quality systems, built from off the shelf parts (as opposed to proprietary MBs and such) for really reasonable prices. I would definately have another look at them before committing to Alienware. Alienware builds a nice machine, but a system with the same components can be had for half the price. (except you don't get the cool looking alien head case.)
