Artificial Life Inc. created Vivienne Rose everybody's virtual girl friend reachable on 3G phones.
Vivienne is a virtual persona created from voice synthesis, streaming video and text messages. She lives on a server and is able to converse about 35,000 topics. Not sure how important that is to the target group. A telling point is that the number one question answered in the FAQ on the V-Girl site is:
"Can I have sex (or Cyber sex) with the V-girl?"
Apparently she is a talker.
Vivienne is not online yet. Technical issues and cultural adaptions delayed the launch. Currently she will start to date in April in Signapure and Malaysia.
The NYTimes has a story on Artifical Life Inc. and Vivienne today. See also Vivienne's site for tons of details about Mrs. Rose.

Jeez. This reminds me of a short-story I read once in Aboriginal Science Fiction magazine. A guy went to this virtual theme-park and "hooked up" with a virtual girlfriend ... the truth being that there was actually a real person behind her virtual image (just as he was behind his virtual image). After a few virtual encounters that went well, the agreed to meet in real life. And when they did, she was even more beautiful than her virtual persona.
The catch?
She was a he ... a transsexual. -

They wouldn't have that in the FAQ if someone hadn't asked. Which brings the question, why did you ask them that BJ_M?
