Modern day players play both. It's more of a question to which burner you have. This topic has been beaten to death over and over again...just browse through the media forum boards...that would be a good start.

What are you going to do with it ?

If you are burning in a stand-alone DVD recorder then + has advantages in the way it writes and finalises. If it is for data, again, + had advantages in multi-session use. If it is to backup your personal collection of movies, then pick which ever format and brand your player likes and use that. If it is for sale or copies of home videos for others, -R is the better bet, although for modern players it shouldn't matter that much (it does though, ask a Sony owner).

I mostly use -R for personal use, although my player plays both. When doing tape - disk transfers if use -R by default, but offer +R if required.
