Ok, I have a problem with XP PRO not recognizing my CANOPUS ADVC-100. I know there was some patch or something to remedy it but I can't for the life of me find it. I have checked the CANOPUS forum and already emailed their tech support but with the long holiday weekend I probably won't hear back from them anytime soon.

When I turn the advc-100 on it freezes my pc. It works perfectly on my other pc's that have WINDOWS 2000 PRO. Any help will be appreciated as always. Thanks!

    Budz,

I notice from your profile that you're running XP Pro with SP2. The only thing I can think of here (and I'm speculating) is that it's a problem caused by SP2. I have run my ADVC-100 hooked up to my laptop (XP Pro SP1) many times, with no trouble.

Sorry, can't think of anything else but SP2.

Thanks for replying. I'm hoping there is some fix for using SP2 with the canopus advc-100. If not then I'll just have to use it with my Windows 2000 pc's.

Sweet, a giant reason for me not to upgrade to SP2. If I lost the ability to use my ADVC-100 I'd be out a lot of money.

Is there a new driver available for it for SP2 maybe? The other thing I would try is disabling the 1394 networking in your network control panel. Do you have any other FireWire devices available that you can try? Another thing you may try is completely uninstalling the driver and then reinstalling it. It could be the transition to SP2 corrupted the driver somehow.

This may not be relevent, in which case please just ignore it.

The ADS usb product line advises to disconect the device during sp2 update.

so as rallynavvie posted, try uninstall of device and driver, then reinstall

My ADVC-100 runs fine on two computers with SP2. A few things to try if you haven't: Boot with the ADVC on. Plug it in after booting. Try plugging and unplugging it into the computer a few times. Firewire is safe to do this with. Check your 1394 interface in Device Manager. If you have another Firewire device like a DV camera, try that to rule out Firewire card problems.

Sorry, that's all I can think of. My ADVC even works on my laptop with a cheap PCMCIA Firewire card.

Great to hear it! I have to admit I got that idea from a post by another member a while back. The only bad thing about the ADVC is their tech support and their 'manual'. Good thing it's generally easy to use.

Another trick I learned, if you don't like all those cables hanging out the front, use a six pin to six pin Firewire cable into the rear, a 1/8" phone plug to RCA jack adapter for the rear audio in and if you use composite in, the little adapter that comes with the unit to feed video in through the rear video in port.

ok well now my advc-100 isn't being recognized again by xp pro w/sp2. i think the problem could be from plugging in my new bytecc firewire/usb combo external enclosure. because it did work before i attached the bytecc enclosure which has the prolific chipset.

i am wondering if the problem is because of the prolific chipset. i heard using oxford chipset is better with less compatibility issues. i have another external enclosure that has the oxford chipset which has no problems when using the advc-100 on that particular pc.

canopus did give me a file to download to fix the xp pro problem but it didn't work. it was to replace some windows\system32\drivers but it didn't work either. although i did forget to tell canopus tech support that i was using xp pro with SP2.

i think it is a problem with that prolific chipset. now i am going to have to see if the local pc shop i purchased it from will let me exchange it for a bytecc that has oxford chipset enclosure. this sucks because i use my faster p4 3.0 pc to do encoding and wanted to use my p4 2.4 pc to capture some stuff which has the xp pro installed but i can't do that since the advc-100 won't work. i use my external enclosures that have my bigger hard drives so i can easily transfer to my other pc for video encoding. i would like that bytecc prolific enclosure to work on any of the pc's i have along with the advc-100. it does work on my windows 2000 pro pc's.

thank god i haven't activated and registered xp pro yet. i got like 16 days left. i am beginning to wonder if xp pro is worth it. i never had problems when using windows 2000 pro. any other advice would be appreciated. thanks!
