I have an avi clip which I have joined using virtualdub and I am not trying to convert it into a dvd using TMPGenc's wizard and instead of fitting neatly onto the disc he says 407 mins and subsequently goes miles into the red and it is only about 100 mins long. Does anyone know if I there is any logical explanation for this? I have other clips which do not give me this problem at all. Plse let me know if u have any idea. Thanks

Most likely your audio is VBR MP3, extract the audio to wav and use the wav as the audio source, guide here.

Is there any way I can determine if it the audio is VBR so I can avoid this happening again? I still yet have to try to try and see if what you suggested zippy will solve the problem. Fingers crossed

Maybe you should try to recode it with virtualdub(mod), as I think the codec used was not the right one, the joyning can be wrong?
To check the codecs used, search for Avicodec around here, it tells you a lot of things about your files, does not work on all audiocodecs, there are others, but this is the one I remember...

If the file had VBR mp3 then you would know as VirtualDub would have said so when you opended it.

skyscraper,
I dont think AVICodec will tell you whether audio is VBR or not but GSpot will. See the screen grab from GSpot of a avi file with VBR audio. VirtualDUb will give you warning while opening a avi file with VBR audio. -
If something reports a bitrate though you can generally tel. You can't have 130kbs CBR. You could however by accident get 128k VBR, so it isn't definate.
