    Hi,

I have downloaded a couple of (free) editors and read instructions on how to use them but cannot find one that will do what I want. It may well be that I am not reading directions properly. I need an editor to a rather simple task. I need to be able to open one file and remove segments or move them to another place. It would be helpful if I could open two files at the same time and copy segments from one to another. Is this the task of an editor or are there some other words I should be looking for?

    Thanks!

Without knowing which editors you downloaded it is difficult to give you any specific instructions.

Most editors will allow you to, at the very least, load a video clip, make cuts at various points, take a section between two cuts and either delete or move it, then squeeze all the pieces together again. Better editors will allow you to load multiple clips at the same time in seperate timelines, then cut and paste bits between them.

If you tell us which editors you have, I'm sure someone can give you instructions on how to do what you are doing.

I have downloaded Wax, Avitricks and zweifull. I need a program with a gui that will do the things I have mentioned above. I am working with AVI files. I will worry about the special effects later but now am choosing a basic sequence of programs to master VCD's from digital video of disabled children that is used to help chart their progress.

Wax is more a compositor that an editor. AviTricks can do what you want. Open a new project and click on the Add Video button. Select the first clip. Move the small slider above the clip to where you want the clip to start. Right-click and mark an in-point. Everything from the start of the clip to the in-point will disappear, and the in-point will become the start of the clip. Move the slider to the end of the section you need, right-click and this time mark an out-point. This will become the end of the clip. Click Add Video again to add another clip. If you need a different section of the same clip, add it more than once. All these changes are non-destructive, so the original clips aren't changed by any of this.

What's wrong with Windows Movie Maker 2? It may be a bit basic but will easily do what you want to do.

Take a look at xinjingqiao's profile. He's running Win 98SE. Windows Movie Maker require WinXP.
