Which brand is better. (last longer/doesn't have a lot of problems...meltdowns, burnouts)

Feel free to offer other brands, but please state why you'd choose that company?

whatever you get dont get the big maxtors, they wear down quick, try seagate, though ive been using wd for many years, these seem to be the best on stream now, plus they have a longer warranty for them, 5ys now.....

Go with the Seagate. You'll only get 1 year on the Hitachi and the WD vs 5 on the Seagate.

If money is no object, then go with the 74GB WD Raptor 10,000 RPM, the fastest SATA hard drive available, even faster than some 10,000 RPM SCSI hard drives. See windows games etc load up faster than those regular 7200 rpm drives. Also, WD provide 5 years warranty with their hard drives.

I have my PC open as I'm posting this. I have a Seagate and a WD drive in it. The Seagate is cool to the touch. The WD is warm.

If you're only planning to get a hard drive for data storage, and not to be used that often, then its no point getting a fast hard drive. For storage, go with a higher capacity, say 200GB. You may want to consider some external firewire hard drives too.

i just purchased the seagate ST3200822A 200GB HDD. i was going to buy it from newegg, but i looked in todays newspaper and saw it for 78 cents more (after tax).. but it came with a $40 mail in rebate, it was a retail box (not bare drive), and i got it today.. its already installed and i'm currently copying data from 2 other drives to it right now.. seems to be a pretty good drive.

i'm not sure if you have a fry's electronics in your area, but they have the drive on special for a couple more days.

I also always go with Seagate. Your mileage may vary.
