Sony 400 Disc CD Player--Won't Play MP3 discs?

I recently bought a Sony 400 Disc MP3 Player and have it hooked up to my receiver via an optical line. When I put in a MP3 disc, it will play it, but I do not get audio. Is there some reason a MP3 disc will not play via optical outputs? Is it even worth having optical audio or should I go back to traditional RCA red and white plugs?

Optical should work, what amp are you using?, have you specified the optical input on your amp? and or have you told the cd player to output digital?

Yea the MP3 Disc works fine with the RCA Jacks--> Kenwood Receiver. The receiver has the input that plays via the CD/DVD function, on the back of the cd player the optical is a digital output. All other cds play fine through the unit, just not Mp3 discs. Is it worth it to not play mp3 discs just to have optical sound, or does it really not matter. To my untrained ear I really can't hear a difference. Any thoughts?
