TMPGEnc! I started with TMPGEnc and was satisfied with the resulting VCDs. The only flaw is, that it takes quite long to encode, 5-6 frames per sec. on my Athlon 1.4 while frameserving with VirtualDub (full vertical resolution, smart deinterlace, bicubic resize to VCD dimension). It would be nice to do MPEG1 capture in real time. But none of the tested encoders beats TMPGEnc in quality. Since I want my VCDs to be fun to watch on a TV, not in a small window on the PC, I will stick with TMPGEnc. Maybe in 2 years, with an Athlon 5.0 we can talk about real time encoding again...

nanoDVR is pretty good, but not very flexible
WinVCR was really good and flexible, unfortunatly I found that both WinVCR and PowerVCR both use LSX which explained the sucky quality when doing realtime VCD.
If you want true RealTime Capture, I suggest you get a Capture Card which does this in Hardware, they have much higher quality
TMPGEnc is defenetly the winner for the moment, and i'll wait for that Athlon WQ

Senfy,
could you suggest a good software realtime capture combination (codec or program) to use on an athlon classic 750 for (S)VCD?
Regards -
The two best and least heavy on the system which even worked on my old K6-2 500, were nanoDVR and WinVCR, i'd prefer nanoDVR, cause WinVCR uses LSX and if you capture to VCD it's got really bad quality, nonoDVR can only do VCD and they use their own encoding.

Thank you,
that was a pretty fast answer. Nice. I´m gonna give Nano a try as it is also free for my WinTV. WinVCR sucked on my system because it didnt work with my VFW drivers anyway.

NanoDVR2 is out, and it does MPEG-2.
The Nanocosmos site mentions it on the order form, but doesn't really say too much on their product page :/
Here's their ordering page:

Cool, thanks!, I didn't know there was a new one out, i'll get it as soon as possible, I really liked nanoDVR which was free for my Hauppauge Card

Sefy,
Do you have any probs with NanoDVR ? Things like capture breaking up after 12+mins, and resulting playback displays just huge squares after this time ?
Thanks
Craig, -
Panasonic is better than any of the above in terms of quailty and speed

Also, in NanoDVR, you can double the GOP (30 frames) to get much better performance as far as blockiness goes...
-
craiggen7, well, considering i've captured a whole hour just for the testing, I didn't have any of the problems you mentioned, it worked rather smoothly, and resulting file was pretty good quality, considering my tape was 15 years old
baker, since when does PAnasonic have a RealTime Capture to VCD ? which program is it ?

Sefy,
What setting are you using ?
This is what I'm doing. WinTV PCI, Free version of NanoDVR from Hauppauge, and using composite from VHS.
Framerate = 25 (for PAL)
Buffers - using Max available (about 900)
Bitrate 2800000 - trying an XVCD
GOP 12 - tried 30 as well
Coding Speed on slow (1)
Motion Est on slow (1)
High Quality ticked, as well as IntraB, Capture Audio, and Fast Audio. Encode Audio offline not ticked.
Use overlay and Delete temp ticked.
Recording to a 40 Gig MAxtor 7200 HD, with 512Mb on an Athlon 1.4, After about 10 mins the playback just turns into a load of squares as if the bitrate was dynamically lowered to below VCD rate.
If you read the included help FAQ, it has a question on this very topic, but their english is sooo poor i just can't make out what they are trying to say.
Give those settings a try cause for the first 10 mins they make the best VCD i've yet seen in real-time.
Any help most appreciated,
Craig.

craiggen7, you are using XVCD capture, the program is NOT designed to handle that, i'm only capturing to VCD which is a pre-set in the program, that is the maximum it is designed to handle, that is why it's a free version, settings it to higher will only cause problems in most cases.
