last week, my burner was burning slower than what it was capable of doing

now, it won't even read blank cds. At first, I thought it was a bad driver so i reinstalled it, nada, next, i physically uninstalled the drive and switched it around with the other burner, still no go. Then, I used a different a ide cable. Still nothing. I tried various media, nada, but then all of a sudden it worked on my blank dvds. I was able to burn and read dvds, but when i put in a regular 700meg cd, it goes kaputs... What is really weird that under the My computer display, it changes the type of drive. Let me explain, First, it was identified as a dvd drive, however, after I put in a blank cd, it switched into a regular cd drive, but it won't read this type of media. I don't think its a burnt out laser or drivers because it can still read my dvds. I do have another cd burner but the optorite has the HD (high density) burn technology (1.4 gigs on a regular 700meg cd) that the other one doesn't. I've tried the optorite site but its useless. Im hoping someone here can elighten me on my situation (and maybe fix it while ur at it).
edit: I've also tried numerous times unistalling and reinstalling the ata/ide drivers, nothing... The problems started after I did this in the first place (after reboot from first unistallation). It also appears that now my other drive is also identified as a reguar cd drive (formerly cd-rw drive).

I still can't figure out what is wrong but I'm doing some research. The more I try to fix it the more screwed up it gets, for example, my both mycdrw and dvdr drives were recognized as scsi devices, I've had to use system restore to restore it back to the point when i was initially messed up (sys restore only dated back a few days, sigh, couldn't recover back far enough to fix it). I've also tried tinkering with the registries, under hkcu\software\microsoft\current version\explorer\cdburning\drives\ and changing them drive type value from 1(cdr) to 2(cdrw). Nada. However, with the nero info tool, I might have found something that could be the cause. Apparently both of the system ASPI are not installed or missing. I'm really hoping someone can offer me some insight. Doing a fresh format and new os install with cost me a weeks worth of work.
