My sony DVP-NS325 Pauses for a few seconds every time a disc reaches 1:23:05 during playback. I've Experienced this with storebought and home made discs (greatAZO, RitekG04). The
last Three discs were Farenheit 9/11, Van Helsing, Chronicles of Riddick Uncut, all studio releases.
Could this be caused by a layer change? if so,why would movies of different lenghts pause at the exact same spot.

drink up....the world's about to end

DVDs don't do layer transition in the same place in the movie, there are also two different ways the layers are done. Home made discs don't have dual layers, it has to be something else. A certain time in playback would come at different places on each disc. Is there some menu setting on the player that is making it do it?

sorry, I was typing this in a meeting (which lets you know just how interested I was in the meeting, ha ha).
what I meant to say was that it sounds like there was a setting on the remote (obviously not a setting that says "hey, pause me at 1:23"), but something that cause something to happen at 1:23.
The only other thing that I could think of is the actual laser on the track in the dvd player. Possibly it sticks in the same spot for a brief period???? -
You've got an odd problem there for sure since a certain time would happen at different places on different discs. Have you tried resetting the machine? There is usually some way to reset to factory specs.

It's not a hack, it's just resetting the player to exactly like it was when purchased. It's different on each machine, I don't know if all players do it or not. If you can't find anything in the manual you could try calling or e-mailing Sony. Try pushing each button on the unit for 10 seconds or so with the power on, if it shuts off then it has reset. Try the power button with it off too. My Panasonic DVD recorder resets that way, by pushing the power button for 10 seconds with the power off, it turns on then turns off and resets after 10 seconds.

I have a similar problem with my standalone player (JVC XV-525) and some homegrown discs (I've been using TDK DVD+R). They pause for 3-5 sec. at a certain spot on the disc. It doesn't happen every time, but when it does, it's always the same spot on each disc (but a different time spot for different discs). I haven't seen it happen when I play the discs on a computer, and I haven't seen it happen with any of my pre-recorded discs.
I suspect it's a combination of the player and the type of disc. Unfortunately I don't have another standalone player to compare to, and I have a bunch of these discs to use up, plus I'm afraid to switch to another brand of disc that might be worse. I'm not too disappointed; the standalone player is several years old and was bought when no one dreamed of recordable DVD.
One thought I had: Could the player be switching VOBs at the time of the pause? -
An update to my last post:
I ripped a DVD and made a DVD+R for the sole purpose of adding chapters and menus. It was a commercially made video of my daughter's 2004 dance recital. Stupid guy did it as one title, one chapter, an hour and a half long.
The output DVD has the pause problem at a certain point, almost an hour into the video.
I tried the source DVD at the same spot. Fortunately the DVD player lets me enter a time code so I don't have to fast forward an hour in. The source DVD does not have the problem.
It's frustrating, because the quality of the output is equal to the quality of the source.
I used DVDLab to add the chapters and the menus and to burn. -
aprete, 1st thing, if you have a problem or question, start a new topic, please do not tray and hijack and old one, even if it seems similiar.
But to address you problem, one possibility is burn speed. Many burners that burn at 8 speed or higher only do so on the outer part of the disk, the inner part of the disk being burnt at 4 speed say. Sometimes, when the burning speed changes it can introduce minor errors in the burn. Many DVD players will quite happily cope with this but some may not.
So try burning at 4X, or even slower, not max speed, to see if that helps. There are 10 kinds of people in this world. Those that understand binary... -
Bugster,
Thanks for the suggestion.
I hang out in several forums and will try to conform to the etiquette of this one. I've been checking out this web site for a year or two and it's GREAT - I've gotten more help about how to create DVD's and VCD's than in all other places combined. But I just joined the forum last week. In addition to asking for help, I also have help to offer.
