This is a link to what is planned for the future of TV:

Better not let your capture card tape your soaps to watch later, the files might self destruct before you watch them. This is depressing, at least for me. I think I will cancel all my TV Channels, when this happens and wait for everything that is possible to place on DVD to be released and then wait until I can afford to buy it. The way prices are already inflated, that could take years. I think no DVD should be allowed to cost more than 15 bucks. The older movies should all be under ten dollars. No CD should cost more than 12 bucks. That is just my oppinion. I hope prices drop, or I will have to wait decades to watch my favorite TV shows.

This is Copy protection at the analog level.
How long will it take for appropriate 'new macrovision' removers to be available?
If this takes off, not long would be my guess
Also not it saysThe deal could make it harder for consumers to make permanent copies of TV shows and movies without permission, if they use computers running the Windows operating system. There are 10 kinds of people in this world. Those that understand binary... -
For upcoming versions of its Microsoft's Media Center Edition operating systems, the computer will allow users to make a temporary copy that can be stored one day, but that cannot be used after that time.
In future versions of its Media software, including the version in its next Longhorn operating system, Microsoft plans to support an upcoming revision of Macrovision's technology that will allow content to be stored for just 90 minutes, or up to a week -
kinda looks like it

When this technology does roll out, I suspect its use will be limited to feature films. -
Maybe it's time to think about an alteritive OS.
Big Government is Big Business.. just without a product and at twice the price... after all if the opposite of pro is con then wouldn’t the opposite of progress be congress? -

The Media Centre system is doomed to failure simply by the fact that it is a Microsoft product. VCRs and DVD-Video players (to a lesser extent) are products one can switch on and just expect to work. Microsoft products have proven to be demonstrably incapable of reaching anywhere near that kind of reliability. Many electronics devices that run on Microsoft technology have proven notoriously unreliable or overly consumptive of power. The Sega Dreamcast ran on Windows CE. UltimateTV was edged out by TiVo and other, more reliable competitors. Outside of the one industry that they virtually own, they are unable to compete. With the revenue from that industry beginning to dry up, it is only a matter of time.

windows has the problems you describe for two reasons ..
one. mismatch of hardware
two. people mucking around in the software
both of these reasons will bring any os to its knees at some point .."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
The anti-Microsoft rants get a little tired...
As indicated above, in almost every case where there's a problem, it's usually related to incompatible hardware or some moron mucking about with settings they don't understand.
I've been up and running on the Windows platform for many years (3d animation, video editing, networking...all stuff that pushes the limits) and I just haven't experienced all the crashing and problems that the Linux and Macintosh crowd seems to love talking about -- at least not after my hardware peripherals were installed correctly.
As for Microsoft being a one-trick pony, well, come on...that's just ridiculous. They dominate the operating system market (Windows). They dominate the office suite market (Office). They dominate the presentation market (PowerPoint). They dominate the instant messaging market (MSN Messenger). They dominate the application development market (Visual Studio .NET). The have a pretty strong offering in the application server market (IIS). They dominate the home gaming market...
Look at PlayStation...only two years ago they were at the top of the heap...but now they're getting towel-whipped in the shower by the X-Box. -

Clearly Gates is running a windows os in your head. Hopefully your family will get together and reprogram you before the cult of Microsoft gains total control.
Microsoft sucks, but they have a current monopoly on software. Isn't that and sleazy business practices why they were sued by US attorney generals and foriegn countries?

This is why they can pry my SVHS and BETAMAX (yes, Betamax) multiple VCR's out of my cold, dead hands!!!! In Beta1S or SP SVHS or even Hi8 SP the recorded images look damn fine!!!
Now the only issue is, HDTV/Digital..well..then I'm screwed! -
