I've just gotten an eMac and I'm wondering how I can transfer a bunch of video files from my PC days. Most of the mpegs work, but the .wmv and .asf and .avi files, for the most part, produce error messages when I try to play them with Quicktime. Is there a way I can change their format so they are readable? Or is there a player other than Quicktime that I should be using (preferably a free one).
Also: I have not put my computer on line yet, so I'm not positive that my Quicktime might simply lack some updates or codecs -- any advice?
Thanks!

WMV needs to be played with Windows Media Player. You might be able to play the ASF files with mplayerOSX or VLC. As for AVI, they will usually play great with either VLC, mplayerOSX, or QuickTime, if you install the QT codecs from divx.com.
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté." -
or the junky video capture that I have used actually works "pretty good"
