Note - The VBR settings might not be applicable for A/V playing of DivX on Set Top DVD players.

  2. Most set top DivX players should be able to handle DivX with VBR MP3 as audio.

Furthermore, those settings are somewhat re-inventing the wheel. The --r3mix preset with LAME is very similar.

Some players have sync problems with VBR audio on DIVX playback.

and --r3mix has not been recommended for a fair while now. It just gets mapped to -V 3 or something in recent releases anyway.

  5. Really? Do you have a reference to that? (mapped to -V 3).

Actually, I can't find anything wrong with --r3mix and it does pretty much exactly what the above settings do.

The --r3mix settings are on the whole very similar to the --alt-preset standard settings. If you can hear a difference from source audio, you have magical ears.

It may not have been -V 3 but it was -V something and it was one of the lame devs who said it. I will see if I can dig it up.

  7. Thanks.

    I'm still using LAME 3.92 I think...

Looks like --alt-preset standard is probably about right for most usage then.
