  1. Is the AMD Sempron the new "AMD Duron" CPU?

I'm looking to build a cheap "internet" machine for someone and just came across this CPU.

    Thanks

    It's an Athlon XP rebadged.

It even shows in the BIOS as an XP!

*EDIT* should add that it uses the Thoroughbred-B core (333Mhz) and not the newer Barton -XP, and has only half the cache of the XP.
We'll be right back after these messages from Binford!

    Yes

The athlon xp - was relegated to replace the duron - and then the athlon xp - is being replaced by the sempron.

Either way you look at it, it is the low end processor.

  4. It's not actually that much more (£20-30) to go from a fairly high-end Sempron (2500) to an Athlon64 XP2800 Newcastle. That includes the cost of a motherboard.

I've seen some combo deals online for a sempron 2200+ and mobo for $99.

EDIT: looking at prices for the chip on newegg ($48) I guess that's not anything spectacular.

I've put a couple of low end computers together with the 2200 Sempron CPUs. I overclock the FSB to 400MHZ and the chip easily runs at 1.91GHZ. Can't beat them for the price, $44US. It's a good combo with a inexpensive MB and DDR 3200 memory.

I have a Sempron 2500+ and I would recommend it for a value PC. From my benchmarking, I have determined that it performs similarly to a same-clocked Athlon XP Tbred 333. Although it is supposed to be a Thorton core, a lot of programs identify it as a Tbred. I have honestly forgotten the difference between the two cores if there is one.

However, IMO the Sempron is currently overpriced while the soon to be phased out Athlon XPs are more of a bargain. For example this CPU which I just bought:

I am giving my Sempron PC to my girlfriend and building myself a new one.

The Bartons are probably even a better deal.

One advantage of the Sempron is that it comes in a socket 754 version, offering you an upgrade path to the Athlon64, as opposed to the AthlonXP with is socket A only.

Unless you get an Asrock "Upgrade" board:
