I was about to buy a spindle of Prodisc 4X with MCC 01RG20 until I read a recent post about alot of coasters resulting from this media. Bummer, I bought a 50 disc spindle last year and they all worked great, not a single coaster but now I'm worried about the quality of another order of the same.
Seems like Ritek/Ridata, Maxell and Ty's are the only reliable ones left and even Ritek seems to be taking some flak now. Do you guy's think it's really just bad luck with the Prodiscs or should I move on to something else? Really liked Maxells but it's hard to find a good deal on them.

Move on to something else and forget about Prodiscs. I too bought alot of them when they were good, but there's way too many problems with them right now to take a chance and hope you get a good batch.

Bite the bullet, pay an extra 20 cents per disc and buy Taiyo Yudens - peace of mind is worth alot more than saving a few pennies and getting nothing but grief.

Rima.com has the 8X white inkjet hub printables for $68/100.

  3. I guess I must be getting lucky because I still haven't had one bad batch of Prodiscs. In fact, prodiscs often end up playing on many dvd players of mine that did not work previously with stuff burned on other discs (Princos, Riteks, Optodiscs, etc.). Since LordSmur turned me onto these they've never done me wrong and I can't find a better value for the price. I've heard somewhere that this may be a firmware issue with some writers so you might want to look into that.

Thousands of them, no problems here, 4x matte PRODISC.

Most complaints of PRODISC are on NEC burners and are ONLY the 8x PRODISCF01 inkjet discs. Not -all- prodiscs.

Well, think I'm going to take a chance and just go with the Prodiscs again. The only store brands I like are TDKs and Maxell. TDKs are a little hard to find around here in anything bigger than a 15 pack for some reason, most likely because of where I shop. Maxell I have always trusted but have to pay considerably more for them. I'll just have to report any problems later. Thanks.

I, too, have had some trouble with Prodisc recently. In the past I've always bought the 4x printables and always had excellent results. But the last time I bought from Rima, they were no longer selling 4x printables, only 8x. So I just bought those figuring everything would be fine. But out of 100, I had around 15 coasters, which really bugged me since I never had coasters at all on previous batches. I still went ahead and bought another 100 pack in hopes that I just got my hands on a bad set of discs. I've burned about 20 discs so far and they've all been good, just hope my luck holds out.

I get my ty's at rima as well. Although I now see that a couple of other vendors are getting to rima's price range, so we may have a shoot-out coming soon.

The MCC and F01 Prodiscs have been hit and miss with me.(Pioneer 105) However, the S03 and 8x S04 have been excellent. If you can get the latter two media codes you should have no problems whatsoever.

  16. I just e-mailed Rima today, the 1631s are still S03.

  18. 1632 matte finish 4x discs are MCC. I just ordered some last week in case anyone's wondering about those...

They work well for me so I'm not knocking them

  19. Ritek hub printables have been stellar for me and they run about 10 cents more than the prodisc ones.

Those Prodiscs should be fine. The Prodisc White Hub Printable that were the problem were the S03 or 04s can't remember which I had the problems with. After going through the hassle with the bad Prodiscs I went to the Verbatim Hub Prints (94812) MCC003 work flawlessly, and the inkjet print outs on the dvds look much nicer and smoother after adding krylon then did the Prodiscs (kind of rough a blotchy)...

Well, I bought a stack of the Prodiscs a while back (MCC vintage) and the first stack of 50 burned flawlessly at 4x. The second stack of 50 ... well, the first 20 burned no problems at 4x, then I hit about four in a row that wouldn't play. No exactly coasters -- the .vob files were readable for the most part on my PC, but the disc wouldn't validate as playable (and of course it wouldn't play in my DVD player). I had 4.3 gigs recorded, full discs, and about the last 500 megs seemed to be where the problem was. Discs looked fine visually, no color shifts in the dye.

Just for the heck of it I burned the rest of these at 1x, and guess what -- worked perfectly! Of course that slows you down quite a bit and who knows if the dye is gonna be stable over time, but at least it's better than just tossing the blanks. My thoughts, anyway.

I'm a little nervous about getting more of these, 'cept the first stack of fifty was so beautifully behaved that I hate to think that the bad batch is the rule and not the exception.

  23. I have a Pioneer 8x writer and had previously used ProdiscF01's and they worked flawlessly. I just bought another order of 300 of them and am just into the 2nd spindle of 50 and I'll bet I've had at least 8 bad verifies out of maybe 75 in the lot. All out near the edge of the burn, just like in cheapo media. Real disappointment.

Only 8 out of 75 is acceptable and typical of 2ND CLASS media, you're still within tolerances of the 80-95% success rate.

If you want better rates, 95-99%, then buy 1ST CLASS media like MXL, TY, TDK, MCC, etc.

I use DataWrite Yellow top DVD+R 8x PRODISC R03 and have always burned them at 12x with no problems whatsoever, dirt cheap, nice colour top and the quality score has never been under 97.

Was £30 per 100 but now down to £25 per 100
