  1. hello all,
I am confused on one thing. When i use Dvdshrink to shrink down a dvd9 disck to a dvd5 disc, dvdshrink is reencoding the video right? But this process only takes about 30 minutes on my amd athlon 1800 for a 3 hour movie plus extras. The same is true when i am backing up a dvd using nero recode.

ON the other hand, if i have divx or dvi file that i want to make into a dvd the prcoess takes significanly longer. Upto 3-4 hours or even longer. What is the difference between "shrinking" a dvd and authoring a dvd from scratch and why is there such a big difference.?

  2. DVDShrink,Nero Recode,etc transcode.
    TMPGEnc,etc encode.
Transcoding eliminates P or B frames that aren't needed(eg repeated) and usually aren't noticable, you can't change the resolution.
Encoding uses all the frames and gives better quality when reducing file size >40%,you can change the resolution(eg 640x480->720x480).

Transcoders do a quick and dirty compression and can be very good quality if the compression is kept to a minimum. For higher levels of compression the encoders are better but take quite a bit longer.

To go from avi to mpeg you need an mpeg encoder.
