ok i am not new to burning dvd at all, but i am new to the bit setting, even tho i think most if not all my drives have that feature, i know my 2 16x burners do

digitmax (lite on 1633) emprex (btc 1016) drives

my thing is nero 6 express with both, but how would i use the bit setting feature?

and is bit setting only on + ? or on both - +?

i never needed to bit set is the reason i havent, but if i ever do i would like to know and test it out

    thanks

Most drives that support the bitsetting option come with some kind of software utillity that allows you to use this option. Also, some DVD-burning programs (Nero, for instance) have a checkbox in the DVD-burn dialog that allows you to bitset to DVD-ROM on drives that support this option.

Also, note that some drives do the bitsetting of +R(W) discs (to DVD-ROM book type) by default, without requiring specific user action.

Lastly, bitsetting can only be done on +R(W) discs -- in theory. In practice, however, there are those (the author of DVDinfopro, for example) who claim that you can do a form of sneaky, under-the-covers bitsetting on -R discs with certain specific brands/models of DVD burner. I believe NU Tech and BTC burners were mentioned by hiim. I don't know how relaible this is, but there was an extended discussion of this topic on one of the CDFreaks forums, and it grew into quite a little flamewar! I'll see if I can locate the URL for it.

  3. not all writers support this feature, and is for +R or +RW

nec, lite-on and some others do. I use dvd bitsetter to change it.

go to http://www.firmware.fr.st/ to check if your drives support it.

i love this feature because even an old panny, who doesn't play anything but -R, plays +RW fine, with dvd rom setting.[/url]

All +R formats (+R, +RW, +R DL) have the potential to be bitset - provided the burner's hardware and firmware support said feature.

The -R format does not need bitsetting, nor is it possible as the booktype is pre-recorded onto the disc and can not be changed.
