I know Photoshop is the best, but look at Paintshop Pro. It does pretty much everything PS does at 1/6 the cost. Also look at the GIMP. Also does pretty much everything the other two do, and it's free.

  5. Or the condensed version of Photoshop - Photoshop Elements (if the full version of Photoshop is out of your budget). It basically has the same features.

Paintshop Pro...if you like a more user-friendly environment.

    Other Alternatives:

    Arcsoft PhotoStudio

    Corel Draw with Photo-Paint

They're all good - I use 'em all.

GIMP is a little more complex...and be forwarned contains spyware.

I installed once I didn't find any spyware in it...

Anyhow to the poster, try out Photoimpact. Very powerful and fairly inexpensive and if your using any Ulead Video products it integrates quite well. www.ulead.com It has a 30 day unrestricted free trial.

Spy Hunter found some spyware in with the GIMP files - it's the bad kind that Spybot and Ad-aware won't detect and is hard to get completely off your computer.
You'll think it's gone but it muliplies and spreads into other folders.

Google search doesn't bring up any info on the gimp being infested with spyware..... That app is used by many people, if it was there would be a lot of info on it.

It's also a standard part of almost every linux distro. Linux people are pretty savvy with this kind of stuff. If it was there, it was either removed from source by the linux crowd, or was never there to begin with. It is possible that it got "bundled" from some site offering the executables, but did not come from the source.

That's a definite possibility since it's public domain.... Did you download it from the links from the Gimp site or somewhere else Rookie.

I downloaded GIMP a few years back - Spyhunter found it in mine and had it listed as Severe level of spyware.

Gator Adware - which isn't easy to get completely rid of.

You'll get that from free Screensavers and desktop themes as well.

Sometimes it's easier to get rid of than others.

    Just be careful.

Although a great app Photoshop is over priced, the only reason I could see justifying the purchase price is if you need some of the propietary PS extensions. Otherwise apps such as Photoimpact or Paint Shop are more than adequate for the average or even professional user.

Gimp's a good one too but I found it hard to use right off the bat and a little confusing.

Agreed. Compared to PSP, GIMP is extremely difficult to get around. The price however, makes it worth the effort. I've used PSP 8 to make some studio quality photos of my child, taking regular snapshots and removing and replacing the backgrounds. Other than that, I only use it for my pathetic attempts at chopping.

I've only been running my linux for a few months, and really haven't done anything in GIMP, it's just nice to know it's there.
