I have had my Sony DRU-500A burner for a few years now and its never let me down.

AFAIK it does not have the ability to set the book type to DVD-ROM, and if it does, I don't think I've ever used it. If I use +R/+RW discs, all my burned DVDs played(if movie), or can be read (if data) in each of my PCs and in my stand alone players.

I am thinking of getting a faster burner, maybe try dual layer, and see all these posts about bit setting or setting the book type. For me, is it really necessary? Or would it just be a "bonus" if the new burner can do it?

If you don't plan on distributing your video creations, then it doesn't really matter.

I create and sell my video creations, so I want to minimize any returns. Plus it doesn't look very professional when your disk doesn't play in their DVD Player. For this reason, I only burn +R's that are bitset to DVD-ROM. I've never had any returns yet and I want to keep it that way.
Got my retirement plans all set. Looks like I only have to work another 5 years after I die........
