Maybe a test clip?

Hello users,

Happy new year!!

We are doing plans on buying our own DV camera for professional use as we have rented one so far. The cameras I have been looking at are XL2 (which seems to be too expensive this time), then Canon XM2 (which is maybe a bit too cheap one or what?) and Sony DSR-PD170P which is my current choice to buy. As we are producing for both computer and TV watch, we would also need a progressive picture so the Sony is a good one for this as well. So if some of you maybe have the same Sony cam or the XM2, can you please post here a test clip made with it or send it to my e-mail georg(at)lennuk.net?

Funny, heh, but I have also been looking at this small 3CCD cam http://www.expandore.biz/detail.asp?getITEM=747&start=16&getbrand=0&getproducttype=1 Would this make any good picture comparable to the Sony one for example and maybe anybody has a test clip of this as well?

All suggestions and comments are fully welcome! We really want to make a good choice in buying a cam so you can also suggest some completely other products if you think they are good.

If you definitely need progessive scan then the PD170 is not an option. It does shoot in progressive, but only at 15 frames per second and the frames are doubled (for NTSC anyway).

However, from what I can tell, if you're concerned about producing video for viewing on a computer, you can always deinterlace.

Aha, so you are saying that if we are also producing for computer watch, the progressive is not really neccessary to do it well? Just if looking at the XM2 clip http://www.wrigleyvideo.com/videotutorial/videos/digo.wmv it is extremely smooth, sharp and no signs of interlacion - can really so good pic come out with deinterlacion? I have also done computer clips with VirtualDub deinterlace filter so far, but they have somehow gone a bit down in frame rate (just a little bit, but a good eye can notice it) and a bit fuzzy.

I have a Panasonic PV-DV953 model and it supports Progressive scan. It also has a Mega Optical Image Stabilizer which I love. I can hold my camera very still with both hands and on a monitor/TV it looks as if I have my cam on a tripod. (I'm VERY good with handling cams). The 3 CCD feature is excellent too.

It might also be worth considering the new Sony Hi-Def cam. It's cheaper than an PD150 and gives better images even in SD mode (it just doesn't have the audio inputs that the PD150 has).

I am actually thinking of buying an XM2 myself, but was hoping for an "XM3" to appear first so that the price of the then "outdated" XM2 would fall to about £1000. Currently the best price I've seen is about £1400 new.

But is the picture of Canon XM-2, for example, also acceptable by TV channels? Is it good enough?

You need to be specific as to your objective.

If you need a pro cam, buy a pro cam.

If your need is narrow to one task, define what you are doing. Don't make us guess.

I for one have lost interest in this thread.
