  3. MTR runs fine on my 10.3.7 system. I did have a slow start-up issue (computer start up that is), which a lot of folks had—as much as a six minute wait till I could get to the desktop. But I solved it by updating my DNS server numbers in my router. Apparently 10.3.7 is much strickter about network issues. Other that that, I've had no problems with the 10.3.7 update.

I went from 10.3.4 to 10.3.7 three weeks ago. Ran Macjanitor, repaired permissions, updated the clone of my boot drive with Carbon Copy Cloner, disconnected the firewire devices, & ran software update. No problems at all. Reconnected the firewire devices & repaired permissions again.

My system (G4 MDD 1.25) has been completely stable. MTR, DVD2One, Toast, Firefox, MS Office, Camino, Thunderbird, etc. work just fine. The printers do print and the burners do burn. All the FW devices mount without issue. Itunes & DVD's play just fine too.

The bottom line - Everything has been A-OKAY.

  5. I just found out today that you need to repair permissions before and after updating system software. Too bad I updated to 10.3.7 a couple weeks ago and have all kinds of problems. Dang!

Some people have found that re-entering the DNS address(es) in the System Prefs/Network/(connection type) field fixes the slow startup problem. As for MTR, it works fine here in 10.3.7 on a 2x2GHz G5. You could try trashing its preferences file, located in your home/library/preferences/ folder, and called com.geezerbuttz.mtr.plist.
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté."

Reparing Permissions is overrated. It's not likely the cause of your problems. While it is wise to repair before and after updating, it's not essential. Unless you have deliberatly changed permissions on a file or folder yourself, chances are it has not been altered. I think its more important that you keep all your Apple Applications in the applications folder, and all the utilities in the utilities folder; otherwise they might not get updated.

Cache cleaning, cron scripts, etc are worth doing periodically, as is occasionally running something like DiskWarrior to repair the directory. Or at least starting up in fsky (or from the install CD) to run the Disk Utility. You may want to check out AppleJack, a freebie that will run a series of repairs and checks at start-up. You should find it on Versiontracker.
