Okay, this is a question from my wife, who just called me in a semi-panic from work.

She put her head down on her desk, and may have hit a key on her keyboard. if so, it was depressed for no more than 30 seconds.

lifted her head, her screen display had rotated 90 degrees, and proceeded to rotate to a full 180. her screen is now upside down - taskbar at the top, start button at top right, all icons and wallpaper rotated.

she tried rebooting, it came back the exact same way.

    my thoughts are:
    - a virus, or
    - a prank, or
    - a physical problem with the monitor or video card, unrelated to anything she did.

a prank is unlikely, as she's more computer-literate than others at her office by leaps and bounds. as such, she's very good about safe surfing, not clicking on things she doesn't know about, not downloading stuff or opening suspicious emails, etc.

so I'm thinking either virus / worm / etc, or a physical problem with the monitor, card or cable.

I know this is a newer Windows system, probably running XP, but no details on the hardware.

anyone have any insight? anybody run into this before? how did you handle it?

any info / tips / commiseration appreciated. she doesn't have on-site IT, it's all at the corporate office in California, and she's nervous that she did something to cause this.

lol.. women.. you sure shes not dreaming? J/K i bet its just a setting.. right click on desktop then settings then advanced.. look in there for all the settings.. my ati card has a rotation tab

P.S. this sounds like one of the pranks.. you know take a screen cap of someones desktop with all the stuff then use it as a wallpaper for an un-suspecting goof.. you could just turn the paper over and do that.. hahah..

Seriously ive never heard of a hot key for doing the rotation but i guess there might be one set up.. it will be a couple like alt or ctrl + anykey to operate.. have her look for hot key settigns too in there. She could try CTRL+ALT+UP key or DOWN key

thanks, I'll have her check that out - I don't think I've ever had a video card with a rotation control, if I have I've certainly never noticed that setting...

I've done the "capturing a screenshot and setting it as wallpaper" prank before, but this isn't it - all icons work, they're just inverted... and it would have had to be done in the 30 seconds she had her head down.
