  1. Read this info today, from the Think Secret web site, about the soon [at MacWorld] to be annouced updates:

"iDVD 5, code-named Maui, will include a number of new features, including one-step DV-to-DVD creation. For users wanting to simply take the contents of a DV tape and burn it to DVD without any editing, iDVD 5 will be able to accomplish this in a single click that rewinds the DV tape and then burns its contents to DVD on the fly. iDVD 5 will also support dual-layer (8.5GB) DVD media, enabling users to burn DVDs up to 4 hours long or shorter movies at higher quality.

iDVD 5 will also, of course, work well with new features of iMovie 5, code-named Storm. iMovie 5 is expected to be renamed iMovie HD with its new support for HDV, panoramic 16:9 aspect ratios, and MPEG-4. iDVD 5 will also be able to burn sharp looking photo albums directly from iPhoto 5, code-named Spellbound."

    That's pretty hot.
If it isn't broken, take it apart and find out why.

  5. Well, there are project (code) names and the ones that marketing actually will test and use. Look at the rumored Apple word processor that was tentatively named "Document." While on the face it may seem fine, you may get the fine piece of conversation: "Did you document the Document document?"

...or, how about "Open the document with Document" ("Drop the document onto Document", etc.)

  8. Yeah, considering the mess iDVD4 is in. Sure hope they fixed those nasty issues. They should have issued iDVD 4.5 a long time ago. Don't think I'm upgrading for a long while until after I see what kind of errors this new release will introduce.

  9. The dual layer ability will please a lot of folks, and result in even longer boring home movie DVDs.

Apple is also going to be introducing iWorks, the long awaited Appleworks update, and something called Pages—don't know what it does. The monitorless Mac (under $500) and the flash memory iPod will also debut at MacWorld. And don't forget Tiger....all in all, smaller bank accounts for us, bigger bonus for Steve Jobs.

You don't have a "need to know."

Also, if they can give different codes names - for the same item - to different working groups, they can tell which group leaked the info. (Such as their recent lawsuit to see who leaked advance product-info to some of the Mac rumor sites.)

Of course, this can just lead to leakers using "fake" codenames to avoid this problem.

I have had LOOONNNGGG talks with the iMovie Project Manager about that. (He acually e-mailed me out of the blue on day and asked to give him a call, since I run the FAQ) I would hope NOT... as it was one of his #1 prorities.

I would guess you will see a KHz change on audio imports and such. If you import audio now you will notice it comes in at 44.1 when it "should" come in at 48.

How could iMovie get native support for HDV files before FCP and FCE (unless they are updated too)?

It would be pretty cool if one could edit SD mpeg2 with iMovie 5/HD.

That is one of the things I was wondering about (not that I will have any HD files to edit in my copy of FCE) - and FCP is already FCP HD - see:

I was more curious about the support for DL media with iDVD 5 - when Apple hasn't shipped any DL drives in it's computers yet, and iDVD has previously only worked with internal drives (or PatchBurn for externals).

Will Apple also start including DL drives in their iMacs?
