In a word, NO. The extra heads on a VCR only help video quality when in special functions, like fastfwd scan, rewind scan, slo-mo, zoom, etc. Normal playback is uneffected.

If you want to a noticeable improvement in playback quality, use a VCR with an S-Video connector and capture using that.

Consider the following exception to "sracer" post. If the VHS tape you are capturing (most comercial ones) contains the "Hi-Fi" audio tracks, your sound capture quality will be greatly increased.
Some VHS HiFi models offers reduced head gap (search for 19 micron in specs), that could theoretically display more details on good tape sources.

mgruber is absolutely correct. Virtually all of mfg'ed tapes released in the last 10 years have HiFi audio tracks. The HiFi audio tracks have significantly higher quality than the linear mono (and more rare, linear stereo) track.

Even TV shows taped off-the-air would sound better if captured from a HiFi VCR(if they were originally recorded using a HiFi VCR with MTS audio from channels broadcasting in stereo).

  5. Basically yes and no, don't try to capture from your 20year old VHS player. But any new enough player with decent tracking and clean heads (no fuzzy white lines all over the place) will do.
