  1. Hi all,

I was wondering if someone could help me and tell me how to raise my hard coded subtitles higher on the screen. They are cut off by the TV at the bottom, I have read this is called overscan or something? I have the dvp-642 as many do. These are naruto episodes which are divx files. I think i read somewhere that I need to reencode them with black bars or something? Could anyone link me to a guide or help me? I not real sure on how to do this.

    Thanks!

Use FitCD to help you determine how to resize ... use 2 Blocks Overscan ... that is usually enough.

  3. I dont mean to be dumb but does fitcd work when reencoding to divx. Also I tried setting the destination manually but it wouldn't let me so which setting do I choose for the destination (dvd720, dvd704, etc)? I may have it right im not sure. I did 2 block overscan like you said. The source aspect is 1.333 and the destination aspect is 1.3345 so is that good? Sorry I am not very good at this, heh. I appreciate the reply, Fulci!

No need really to use FitCD if you have an avi source and your destination is avi.

Your source is likely 640 or less pixels wide so you can simply pad the source by 16/32 pixels or if you want resize down then pad.

    avisource("whatever.avi").addborders(16,16,16,16)

  5. Ok thanks Celtic. I will try out what you said should I make my resolution stay at it's native 640x480? When I added the borders it changed the resolution to something else. Also could I have just added 16 to only the bottom since thats the part that gets cut off or must you appy that to every side?

Just add 16 to the bottom as long as your dvp-642 will play it without changing the picture.Write to cdrw/dvdrw to test.

  7. Thank you john. I finally got the subtitles to show up when I added 32 to the bottom! Although alittle bit of the subs are still being cut off. Can I add more bars like 40? Thanks everybody for the help so far!

  9. My player wouldn't even let me play it when i added 40 to the bottom. It wouldn't load the disc.

Best to resize it down a little and then add the border.

  11. Thanks for the advice John. I finally got it to work! I had to add alot of black bars. 40 on the bottom and 16 on both the left and right side. Now all I need to figure out is what settings (using the divx 5.2.1 codec) I should use to reencode the episodes. Thanks again!

Should stick to a max of 720x480/576. There is a reason why I suggested 16/32. Keeping it mod16 will help with compression as otherwise you have the border falling in the middle of a macroblock. So use 48 if you can.

Use the HT profile. The profiles are there for a reason. Could also try a recent version of XviD with the HT profile enabled. Won't let you enable qpel, GMC, etc. and sets the VBV to DXN HT values.

  13. So if I am understanding right...which im probably not! Resize to 720x480 and use 48 as the number for the bottom? The sides are what are really giving me trouble. I had to change my settings to 56 on the left and right, for the whole sub line to show up. This is for the really long lines only. It leaves two ugly black bars running the height of the screen on each side probably about 1-2" wide maybe? Well anyhow, I will try doing what you said see what happens with that. Any continued advice is always welcome.

  14. Ok I got the screen just how I want it. Thank you everyone. Now just a quick question. Would there really be any advantage of choosing xvid over divx or vice versa? I guess divx is supposedly more compatible with the dvp-642 but I wasn't really sure if xvid had an advantage over divx in certain areas. These episodes tend to have alot of motion and action. Is either one better than the other at encoding high speed motion? Thanks for your time!

Hard to say with XviD having its hands tied by the HT profile. Personally I would still use XviD. Probably should change the profile so it locks bframes to 1 and packed bitstream to on though.

Guess you don't have to stick 100% to the profile, for instance I doubt that having 2 instead of 1 consecutive bframes will be a problem. Guess the same applies to DivX though, although I am not sure how VBV works with it.

  16. Ok thanks Celtic. I will try both and see which one looks the best to me. I don't have much experience with xvid so I will try to interpret what you said and make the correct selections, haha.
