  1. Using DVDInfo and Nero I ran a scandisc on a 3 year old Princo DVD-R. When I placed the Princo into my LG DVD-Rom drive the disc would fail once it got past 80%. However placing the Princo into my Pioneer A05 it passed a scandisc.

    Weird.?

Or are the outer edges weak or failing and the burner has a stronger lens ?

Descrypter also failed on the disc when placed into my rom drive. My burner was able to rip it. So I'm backing it up to new media just incase the disc is failing.

Thoughts or conjecture is most welcomed.

    Cheers & Merry Christmas

Not weird. One drive is not as good a reader as the other. Easy as that. Very common. Not every drive will read every disc.

I believe you are quite correct as a few more Princos, Maxells and Memorex failed in that reader. YET passed quite nicely in both my Pioneer A05 and LG burners.

Is there a DVD reader of choice ?

Thanks muchly & Happy Holidays !!!

I've found my LG DVD-ROM to be the best ROM unit I've used to date. Same for the BTC burners, in terms of reading media.

  6. It's my DVD-Rom is a LG. WinXP device manager shows it as a HL-DT-ST DVD-Rom GDR8162B.

On another note is Princo "white topped" DVD-R good or bad media. It's really cheap in Nova Scotia. A spindle of 50 -R's can be had for $22.00 (Canadian dollars).

If there is a Sam's Club near you they have 50 pc Verbatim 4x for less than $19 USD. At least they do where I live in IN.

Code is MCC 01RG20 on the -R.
The Verbatim 4x +r is the same price.

Do you have Sam's Clubs in Canada?

  10. None in Nova Scotia yet. But I understand they will be soon. The closes Sams to me is about 350 miles away in Bangor, Maine.

    We do have Costco though.....

  11. Princo (CompUSA brand) has been bad for me. High failure rate up front. Now a number of the disks that seemed to work are starting to fail to read toward the latter part of the disk. Can not even copy them to good media.

Two years ago they were mediocre. Now they're junk. But even worse is the Princo logo media. It was always junk.

Mysterybyte has Riteks and Prodisc's, they did sell Princo's, but to many complaints i guess. There is also Robotnic in Bayers lake, the prices there are abit higher but not to bad.

Thumbs up for NamPla. I use a Pioneer 106d with Princo blank media and have no problems whatsoever. I buy Princo as they are the cheapest on the market.

I don't where you live, Blinky, but Riteks now (here in Melbourne) are only $5 bucks more. They look prettier too, heh. And they get all the good reviews (G04's)...

But yeah, Princos have always treated me fine. Not a coaster...

Yes, they do & very well too. What Im concerned about is that the data sometimes deletes from the Princo disk in 6 months to a year sometimes. Dunno why, but that must be why they are cheap.

Has it happened to you personally, HandyGuy?

    (No flamin', I'm just curious! 8) )

    https://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia

I just saw 280-odd comments for Princo, with "good" ratings all round, while everything else had 1 or 2 comments and "poor" to "mixed" ratings, heh.

That's weird (like I said before).

I'm not saying they DON'T lose data. What I'm saying is, is mine DON'T. And I'd like to know WHY a DVD-R CAN lose data.

If nobody knows the "why", well that's fair enough and I will take that onboard. Experience counts for a lot, after all. And I kinda trust this forum heaps!

BUT...There seems to be a huge campaign against Princo!?

  20. NamPla, I moderated another board once & Princo's worked great with Pioneer writers & played great on a PS2.... Is that what you are questioning?

And, yes, some people don't agree with me that data gets deleted after a year, some said 6 months.

At any rate, the dvd media comments on it here don't go past 4x. Must be old media
