you are making a wise choice. gentoo is amazingly simple once you get it installed and getting it installed is not very hard at all. they are currently working on a painelss point-and-click type graphical setup process but it is not ready for public yet. There are many methods to installation and here are a few that shpuld get you going. I'll try to be as helpful as possible but you should really turn to the Gentoo Forums and do a search for isntallations for any answers you may need.

Gentoo Wiki Installation Methods - you will want to pick the most appropriate one that fits you and your hardware.

Gentoo Advanced Install - this is very similar to the method that I personally use, however I've been doing my own version for quite some time and have it down to a science. (have not put it up on any websites yet though).

Gentoo Installation Resources - here you will find all the Official Gentoo installation methods.

I hope this is not making it look more complicated than it really is. It is just that Gentoo offers so many methods of installation so that the user can find one that is most comfortable for them.

I find that the Advanced Install listed above is probably the easiest and most unique in that the step-by-step instructions are very easy to follow and everything is given so you are sure not to make a mistake. Also this method has many advanced features and still gives you a fully customized install. I have edited some of the direction on there to make them more user friendly and would recommend this method even to someone just learning linux.

    Enjoy!

P.S. Some people (including myself) ran into an issue with 2005.0 installation - this depends on what method you use - but if you get an Error at one point that says "
!!! ERROR: app-admin/syslog-ng-1.6.5-r2 failed" then you will want to visit this link Syslog-NG/FLEX Gentoo 2005.0 - my nick is 'outspoken' on there too.
