I have just started using TMPGEnc Author 1.6 to author my DVDs without the optional AC3 plugin.

When I go to 'chapter cut edit' where you trim frames and edit the chapter-list I get no audio when playing (previewing) the clip.
The audio speaker is greyed out!!!!!!

Everthing else seems to work ok, but not having audio when triming and editing chapters is a real hastle.

    Any ideas?

What format is your audio in? I think that if you separate the video and audio into separate tracks with the same name (you can then convert your audio into AC3, using one of the free encoders), the program will recognize both.

I also use TMPGEnc DVD Author without the AC-3 plug-in and not having audio in the edit/chapter mode is normal when your imported video has AC-3 audio. It is there though and will be there on the final DVD.

I do seem to recall you get audio if you use PCM WAV audio. I assume it works for MP2 as well but I never do MP2 audio.

I have heard that if you get the AC-3 plug-in that you will get audio preview in the edit/chapter screen.

I happen to be lucky enough to have Soft Encode which is one of the better (if not best) AC-3 converter so I have no need for the AC-3 plug-in and so far I have been able to deal with not having audio preview.

Please note that some people still have trouble getting audio preview with the AC-3 plug-in but that seems rare and probably an uninstall and reinstall would fix it (if that should happen).

From what I have read it seems that the AC-3 plug-in does a good job of AC-3 conversion ... at least much better than using BeSweet or ffmpeg. It is probably the cheapest non-freeware way of encoding your audio to AC-3 format.

I import the video and audio directly into TMPGEnc DVD Author using the 'add dvd video' option.
My source is directly off a DVD recorded using my dvd-recorder (not PC) in VR-mode.

TMPGEnc DVD Author reports (track settings) the audio as being Dolby Digital (AC3) 48000 kHz 256kbps.
Why does it report audio as being AC3 if the plugin is not installed?

So does this mean I get no audio preview unless I have their AC3 plugin installed?

Whether or not you have the plug-in installed it will report the audio as being AC3. You are correct, you will get no audio preview unless you cough up another 29.95.

If you are looking to put chapter markers in exact places.....watch the footage on your DVD Player(either TV or computer) and write down where you want the breaks. I do it all of the time.
