First off, thanks for the great tutorials and all the other searchable gems that helped me get my DVDs just how I wanted them.
I decided to go advanced and followed your tutorial successfully for leaving menus and retaining the episodes (less the extras etc).
This worked twice for me (with episodic anime discs) but now I've failed twice. I follow instructions exactly but for some reason VLC is the only device capable of playing after I replace the VOBs with their dummy counterparts.
The DVD player, PS2, and Apple's own DVD player refuse to play or hang which leads me to believe its some funk IFO. One case in particular was a straight rip, and the original is well under 4.4GB if the extras are removed. I tried seeing if I could simply replace the VOBs I didn't need and replicated the error I received above. Might I still need DVD2One to modify/ re-do an IFO?
I'm sure there's a simple solution but I'm not able to grasp it from my vantage point.

I simply delete unneeded VOBs, and it works for most DVDs. There are a couple rare DVDs for which the menus refuse to play correctly if any VOBs are missing, and then it's necessary to use DVD2OneX or something to shrink, or do a film-only backup. For most, though, deleting unneeded VOBs are just the trick. No need to replace with dummy VOBs.
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté." -
I had no idea it was that simple, I guess I need to read up on what exactly an IFO is, i thought those files were there because they were somehow referenced. learn something new everyday.
thanks for your response by the way -
yea if i had time i would update that page
it probably always worked to just toss them, i just figured I would replace them since thier structure is in the IFO
hope your ? was answered -
whoa, so i can just toss the vobs i dont need? does this include bup or ifo files as well?
I'm guessing apple's DVD player just doesnt like these dvds, it looks to me like vlc is playing them just fine but im not sure if any of my other household players will work with these discs.
-thanks for the replies by the way, i would have written back sooner but i was buried under an exchange server install. -
ok- so after downloading another software dvd player it looks like there is 2-5 secs of dead space before the menu system et all becomes active. after that i can click away and head directly to the feature or individual scenes. It seems odd, but certainly not a show stopper since i can avoid all the intro garbage every time i watch wonderful days.
im going to attempt a burn and hopefully that will perform in a similar fashion on my home player. THX! -
No, just toss the .vobs you have to keep the ifo's otherwise it will freak out on you.
I am not sure about apple dvd player playing the "tossed' method, but they do play the ones you replace with empty text file.
bascially were talking a few seconds more to make a replacement text file vs tossing them
your call [i would do both and see what your player likes and choose the easiest method]
