  1. Just wondering which optical drive I should purchase for my new system. I would like the best drive available since they are very affordable now.

Also, does dual layer mean that it will utilize both sides of a dvd disc? Thanks!

Dual Layer uses the new 8.5GB dual layer discs (burns on one side, no need to flip it over) and will burn the old type as well (DVD+-R / cd's).
The new D/L discs will cost you around $10 a peice though, USD.

As far as an optical, I bought the 12X dual layer Optorite from Newegg for $59 and haven't had any problems at all. But check out the DVD Writer list to see what everyone else thinks.

Cant FULLY answer the question but LG drives are excellent (and support DVD-RAM) but are they better than other brands?..also using a SONY 16X DL (dont recall the number) and thats pretty dam good...in as far as I have no other 16X burner to compare it with.

I think the FULL answer is THERE IS NO PERFECT DVD burner as only BAD burners get reported (like everything else in life). Stick with a brand name and you wont go far wrong.
