Latest FW or hacked FW for NEC3500A

I ve just got myself an NEC3500a. Wondering what is the lastest FW avail. to unlock ripping and increase burning speed.

NEC USA web site have a 2.17 version, but NEC's eroupe we site http://www.de.nec.de/home.php?lang=ENG has a 2.18 version

I ve got my 3500a. It is just wonderful. Using current 2.16 FW, this baby burns faster than the 108. The 3500 rips thru a DVD with 11x rate, sure beats that 108 on that part.

In general, I think the 3500a beats the 108 handdown. I know, b/c I have both.

the site is still there and they still have the nec but it doesnt look like a very good deal to me. newegg has them for under $70

I just purchased this model from newegg. It has 2.16 firmware. Newegg describes it as an OEM version: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=27-152-032&depa=0. I have downloaded the 2.18 firmware, however when I go to the readme file for this new firmware it says it is not for OEM versions. Specifically it says: "-this Update works only with NEC ND-3500A(G) retail/ bulk, not with OEM releases.
(OEM means part of a full PC package or external USB/FireWire variant of this burner)

>For OEM products contact your dealer, distributior or manufacturer of PC-/ USB-package."

So I wonder if it is ok or not to apply this new firmware to this product. Anyone with experience doing so out there?

I bought one and it came with 2.16 fw. I was able to burn everything well, including ripping at 11x speed. My opinion is you don't have to upgrade to 2.18 if you are not sure.

You can safely upgrade the firware tienq, just use the above sites, and choose one of MANY the cdfreaks firmware gurus have made. I currently use quickee's f/w and am burning Memorex 4X media (richojpn01) @ 12X. Just read through all the post by quickee and Liggy/Dee27, it's a good days worth....Good Luck, you'll love NEC
