Yes, I know Sony had/has one (DRV-1000), but it was very expensive. Considering how cheap DV cameras are, I find it surprising that I can't buy a DV tape reader that fits in a drive bay, and by internal connection to a Firewire port, enable the transfer of DV at higher than 1X rates. Sure would help speed up the process.

Firewire is firewire... you'll never get over 1X... Internal vs. External = whatever...

I think what he means is faster than real time video. Transferring one hour of video from a DV cam to a PC takes one hour. DV is ~25Mbp/s (IIRC) whereas Firewire is 400MBps. SO much faster transfer is possible in theory.Originally Posted by upshot

But you're limited by the playback speed of the camcorder. If you had a camcorder that used solid-state memory instead of tape as the medium, you could probably do itOriginally Posted by bugster

kind of like "high speed dubbing" eh? Guess that would be cool.... but, I would guess that the transport control and heads would become cost prohibative. In other words 2x dub for 4x price (in theory). Also, I wonder if the DV firewire standard would be unusable at this speed and therefore a propriotary data standard would have to be utilized... more cost...
just a thought...

The DV standard is merely a standard for the file format. DV is the format, and not AVI. Transferring it faster wouldn't require a change in the format.Originally Posted by upshot
Transferring video from your camcorder to your PC is merely a file transfer operation and not a "capture". The camcorder has already "captured it".
Although the PC and the FW can transfer faster, the tape mechanism will limit you. -
Yes I know, but a PC based tape drive utilising DV format tapes should (in Theory) be able to read the tapes from your camcorder much faster. I was simply pointing out that the limitaion is not with firewire, but with the camcorder.Originally Posted by Capmaster

yeh... I've been wondering if these memory based cameras will ever take off quality wise or will they stay in the "consumer" market... If you had a fire 800 controler in one of those cameras the transfer would be VERY FAST...Originally Posted by Capmaster

Broadcast level DVCAM and DVCPRO cams can transfer faster than 1x. Its not about the IEEE-1394 bandwidth, its about the cost of the playback hardware required. There is little mass market demand for this feature so costs would be very high. Pro transports are well over $5000, not including the camera.
Take your choice from this list

It looks like the fast transfer currently uses the SDI connect rather than IEEE-1394.
