Can you guys tell me what might be the most common compression settings used in DVD Shrink? Maybe break it down into three sections if you could.

    Menus:

    Main Movie

    Extras

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks again.....

there really is no universal settings. it's all preferance. if you dont wanna mess with it just use what originally comes up in shrink. me personally i do everything i can to get the best quality out of the actual movie, cause thats the whole point of the dvd in the first place right?

Nothing like an open-ended question, eh boys ?

My preference is to reauthor and do Movie-only unless it's a music DVD. I only watch the extras once, possibly twice, so I don't mind pulling out the original just for that.

I generally just keep AC3 5.1 audio if available. I let everything else be set automatically.
    If in doubt, Google it.

What would be the lowest compression ratio one would use untill it began to look fairly poor on menus and extras?

Try it yourself and find out !

It all depends on what you're viewing it on IMO. I watch my DVDs on a 27" TV, and I just leave DVDShrink at its automatic settings without any hassles.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Quality for a transcoder depends not only on how much compression you are applying, but also how well the original was compressed, and how much headroom might be hiding in the original file. I have been able to use shrink to get acceptable (for a particular bastard like me) results from 70% on some films, and completely unacceptable (again, to me) results from 94% on others.

You will often find that menus and extras are already pretty well compressed, so it doesn't take much to push them over the edge.

    I agree with this.
I can even change your numbers to: 56% is the lowest I went and I have tested rough scenes on the computer and I was not able to see the difference.
The other number can also be changed to 100%. Some DVDs are scrap to start with. Any compression will be badddddd.

  8. Hi all.

guns1inger, just out of curiosity, could you let us know what DVDs produced unacceptable results at 94%?

I cant remember the title. It was with a previous version of Shrink (before AEC), and the disk was already pretty heavily compressed budget release. I remember wondering why it was dual layer when there was so much head room on the disk.
