I have an ATI AIW 8500DV and use a video stabilizer for copy-protected tapes. I have backed up most of the VHS tapes I want to preserve on DVD without any problems, but I have one that just wont work. It is a store bought original that has hardly been played. I am able to copy it tape to tape without using my stabilizer so I doubt it is a copy protection issue. I have also tried capturing from the copy but I get the same results. I have read all the info I can find and haven't found a solution. Some posts have said that if the quality of the tape is bad it can behave this way but in most of those cases they are dropping frames, which I am not. I have also been able to capture from old home made VHS tapes in much worse shape without problems. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
Here is a still of how it captures:

The problem was the ATI card. I bought a USB capture device and the movie captured flawlessly.

Why is the ATI card supposed to be unable to capture this movie? -

The tape is not copy protected. If you read my first post I mentioned that I could tape from tape to tape with no problem. I also mentioned that I use a stabilizer. I have captured many copy protected tapes with the ATI card using the video stabilizer and never had any problems.
From what I have read the problem is caused by ATI's over sensitive macrovision detection. I have come across several posts where people can't capture videos they have recorded themselves with their camcorders.
Also what I have read and the responses I have received from posts the only solution to capture such movies using the ATI cards seems to be the one Lordsmurf gave, which is get a full time based corrector.
The reason I tried the USB capture device is because it was cheaper solution and also the hardware was easier to find and more available without having to order online. -
It's not "just" ATI. These days, pretty much ever capture card, DVD recorder and VCR incorporates extremely sensitive anti-copy detection. No matter what device you buy, at some point in time, you'll likely face some sort of related issue.
