People in Canada and many in the U.S. and Australia knew him and some of his stories very well. Hanna-Barbarra turned his only Children's Book "The Secret World of OG" into an animated TV Special that was very popular and highly sought after. I met the guy once when I was 6 years old as he visited our school when I was living in upstate NY. I wish I was old enough to know to ask for his autograph. Nice guy if I remember right.

    Very famous in Canada

    Editorial: Pierre Berton, 1920-'04

Pierre Berton, who died yesterday at age 84 after a long career as an author, newspaper columnist, television and radio commentator may well be best remembered as the writer who made Canadian history fun.

Through his bestselling books — The National Dream, The Last Spike, The Dionne Years and Drifting Home — Berton turned a nation on to the fact that our history was worthy of study and was in many ways as exciting, and often more so, as that of the United States.

Born and raised in the Yukon, Berton never lost his love for the remote parts of Canada, although he spent most of his life in the Toronto area.

In 1958, Berton joined the Star and for the next four years wrote six columns a week, exposing corrupt real estate and door-to-door salesmen, used car dealers and undertakers.

"I had fun," Berton once said as he reflected on his years at this newspaper. "It was probably the best time of my life, the four years on The Star."

Pierre Berton was missed when he left the Star. Now he will be missed by an entire nation.

I think his children's book is part of Canada's elementary literature education now. I know some of his other works are in some college literature courses there, and a bit is trickling in the the US colleges too. Good book writer and columnist.
