Hello. I am about to backup The Chronicles of Riddick with Shrink 3.2. I was wondering if someone could give me some advice as to what ACE is appropriate for that movie. I got the compression down to 83.8%. Thanks for any help

I take it, you're doing the movie only and only 1 audio track? I would use smooth, because of all the black and fast action.
I'm doing the whole disc. and using maximum smoothness
Then I'm going to compare it to DVDrebuider -
My settings:
99 to upper 80's: Sharp (default)
Mid to Low 80's: Smoth
80 to 70: Max Smooth.
I think 70 is about the limit. I did the SE of Aliens. (Main Movie, 5.1 and subs) Its 155 mins long. Looks good on a 50 DLP HDTV. Not as quite sharp as the orginal, but more than watchable. (Did a 60-ish level and it was VHS at best.)
I first rip the DVD to the hard drive with no compression with Shrink. Then opened the files to transcode. Make sure you do the deep analysis before the transcode. For the love of God, use hub/core labels on your Recordable Discs! -
Thanks for your replies
stiltman, I would been interested in hearing how the quality looks on your backup of the whole disk.
FYI- I tried using the demo version of DVDFab Express to see the quality of Riddick and I wasn't impressed. The colors weren't as vivid and the video quality seemed a bit soft. However, with that program you cant cut off end credits, which I did with Shrink to get it down to almost 84% -

I did DVD Rebuilder with CCE 3 passes and and removed the same things, I also stole 25% from the extras, bitrate was like 7.5K/300/3.3K with a 13% savings from the extras.
I played them both on a 27" tv and a new Apex DVD player
I zoomed in at 4X too compare.
DVD Rebuilder just had a slightly better color to it, other than that, I was really amazed how well DVD Shrink looked using max smooth. At normal viewing, I couldn't tell the difference on my 27" tv -
i usually use no aec, when 70% or higher, but when lower (usually 60-70), i use smooth. i can't really tell the difference, with our 72cm tv (whatever that is in inches) but you would recommend using sharp even if in high 80's?

Hi all.
I just wanted to let you know "Smooth" and "Maximum Smoothness" are not always the best options to choose when the compression ratio < 70%.
More often than not, "Sharp" or "Maximum Sharpness" will yeld better results.
The problem is there's no rule-of-thumb as to what to use and when, so I'd suggest you do as I do.
Make a quick comparison test on a short segment of the title.

P.S: "Maximum Smoothness" is the only AEC that will be applied whatever the compression required.
All the others will only be applied if an when neccessary (as deemed by DVD Shrink analysis).
So it's safe to always leave the default AEC option checked.
vdk_au, AEC can also have a positive effect on titles requiring less than 30% compression.
