Xvid is a compression codec an .avi file uses. Your dvd player will only recognize .mpg files.

Every player is different. Try it and see.
How would you author the menu structure for that? I don't know which programs will accept an avi and not try to convert it. -
There's too many variables here.

Seems the most popular one now is the Philips DVP 642 which many retail stores offer for about $69.99 give or take. I've seen it on-line for as low as $62.99 with free shipping.

canadateck:
As FulciLives says the dvp-642 is divx certified and will play xvid files and other mpeg4 compliant avi but there are a few limitations which have been posted many times in recent threads. If you live where you name implies in Canada then your local Wallmart store carries it at the regular price of $89.99 can.
I bought mine on sale at Best Buy Ontario on sale for $79.99. -

Takes 5minutes and isnt a problem once i got into the habbit of checking every time. payed €84 + €14 vat and del. to ireland and i am more than happy with it so far

You just burn the AVI files on data DVDs. I use Nero's "DVD-ROM (ISO)" template.

I think you press the subtitle button on the remote to turn the subtitles on.
