Xvid is a compression codec an .avi file uses. Your dvd player will only recognize .mpg files.

Every player is different. Try it and see.
How would you author the menu structure for that? I don't know which programs will accept an avi and not try to convert it.

    There's too many variables here.

There are a few ... very very few ... stand alone DVD players that CAN and DO play MPEG-4 files.

Most of these types of DVD players are more-or-less made to work with DivX (a version of MPEG-4). Some will also work with Xvid (another version of MPEG-4) buT some don't and even when they do you have to be carefull as to what settings you use when you encode your Xvid.

Seems the most popular one now is the Philips DVP 642 which many retail stores offer for about $69.99 give or take. I've seen it on-line for as low as $62.99 with free shipping.

As FulciLives says the dvp-642 is divx certified and will play xvid files and other mpeg4 compliant avi but there are a few limitations which have been posted many times in recent threads. If you live where you name implies in Canada then your local Wallmart store carries it at the regular price of $89.99 can.
I bought mine on sale at Best Buy Ontario on sale for $79.99.

Keep in mind that there are some features of both the Divx and Xvid codecs that most hardware players can't play. The Philips, as well as most Divx players, can't play files encoded with the Quarter Pixel (QPEL) feature. Many can't play files with Global Motion Compensation (GMC) -- although I think the Philips can.

  12. im using a yamada 6600 dvd player for xvid playback, plays divx perfectly, the only issue it has is that it wont play xvid encoded with gmc (very rare ive seen any done with this, as its more difficult to do than with divx) and it doesnt like packed bit streams on xvids (which 90% of my downloads have) and this causes jumpy playback, but is easily checked and rectified before burning the cd/dvd, by using a little app called mpeg4modifier to check and unpack the bitstream and resave the xvid. Takes 5minutes and isnt a problem once i got into the habbit of checking every time. payed €84 + €14 vat and del. to ireland and i am more than happy with it so far

  14. You just burn the AVI files on data DVDs. I use Nero's "DVD-ROM (ISO)" template.

Mine will only read off of CD's. Nice to know. So with your player you can put more then one Avi on a DVD without encoding?
Yes, as many as will fit on a DVD. I have some disks with dozens of AVI files. When I put a disk in the player I get a menu with the name of each file.

I just went to walmart and bought it great plaer.. is there a way to burn the xvid with Subs?I tried to burn one but it dosent play them..
    Thanks
It's been a while since I played with the Philips 642. If I remember correctly you need a fairly recent firmware and it only plays SRT subtitles.

Put the SRT file on the DVD along with the AVI. Use the same name -- except for the extension of course:

    filename.avi
    filename.srt

I think you press the subtitle button on the remote to turn the subtitles on.
