Finally these people are starting to wake up to the fact they have been ripped off for years.
I am sick of both the free aol cd's and the aol commercial as to how to make the internet better.
IMO, the way to make the internet better is to get rid of Aol. - End Rant.

Yea, they have detached from the matrix and realized what the rest of society already knew...AOL sucks.

I guess AOL users and those who sign up do not really see that the ad is actually saying "all" the users think there is something wrong
access4less.com = 4.95/mo
650dialup.com = 6.50/mo -
Notice that you are not getting a new AOL CD every month these days?

I can't really say anything bad about AOL because that's how I got my start on the internet. Back in '95 I popped one of their discs into the computer and signed up. (back then I think it was a floppy disc, not a CD).
After I learned to navigate the internet I dropped AOL for other dial-ups, and also the free internet services until they went down the toilet. Finally I got cable and never looked back! My 2 mbps cable works out to about $24 a month.
AOL did help a lot of people get started on the internet, but I don't understand why people would still pay the high price instead of using the cheepies.
So, even though everybody complains about them, AOL did help popularize the net.
And, to go one step further, Microsoft also helped by getting everybody into computing. (yes I know there was also Apple and Commodore!) -
i hate aol too.. BUT i started on aol back in the day.. that and BBS. but when you had to pay 2.99 or 3.99 per hour that was nutz.. i would get 2 and 300 a month bills sometimes.. shoulda had playboy instead huh :P but internet was new back then so i was an "elite" thing i guess. AOL is where i got my first listen of the duckjob.wav.. you all remember that dont you.. the funniest thing on the net to this day.. i had tears in my eyes from that one..

I use AOL but it's through my ISP with a TCP/IP connection - if you use that, it's much less than what they charge a month for regular members.
Though I don't really need AOL...there are a couple things I use it for that I wouldn't have access to if I only used my ISP.
I have a hunch the reason so many have dropped AOL recently has something to do with Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 (the part about your money is funding terrorists) -
I never did like AOL anyway.

I've never liked AOL. I can't say I blame everyone who uses it. I think it's not a bad start and it probably offers some great help for computer and internet noobs. On the other hand, I've come across a lot of people that when you explain to them that they're paying almost as much as broadband (or in some cases more if they have a 2nd line), and they give you the whole 'all my family / friends are on AOL' excuse. Unplug!
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore. -
WTF is with you people? "AOL helped me get on the net..." ?! If you were so dumb to setup even Win95 for dialup access, then why didnt you give $50 to some smart geekboy and had it done?! It woudhave been a one-time payment, and apparently you would've helped some teenager financially in doing so, while in the same time you wouldnt have helped grow some f***g monstrosity that even had incompatible email with the rest of the world for some time! SHAME ON YOU!
F***K AOL! -

It's not just about getting on. It's about getting around. Can't say much for those who are just signing up, but for those who have or had been on years ago, there wasn't always much in the way of help if you didn't know where to look.

What's sad is people who use broadband and have an AOL account too. I've told a bunch of people they didn't need AOL to get on the internet. They looked at me confused.

That's what AOL wanted in the first place. Everything else AOL couldn't care less about. They'd have made more money taking over (Excuse me) "merging" with RCA. RCA was a little smart for them.

I don't like AOL and have not used them in quite some time.
However -- the reason I used them and the one area I must give them props for is their excellent parental controls. Excellent content filtering, blocking and reporting. For me it was well worth the $9.95/mo. BYOA fee along with my Broadband to give my kid's PC's wireless access via Comcast.
Yes -- I've tried a few other S/W products (NetNanny, Cyber-patrol, etc.), but they are just too resource intensive and CPU hogs.
AOL's parental controls really are quite good. -
AOL was good at bringing the largest number of non internet users online, but it all ended there. Everything AOL offers can be offered by someone else in a program that works better, has more features, and is cheaper. AOL knows they overcharge 99.9999999999E^1,000,000,000,000,000% of their customers. Why else do they keep increasing the free minutes for the discs they hand out. They're at, what, 1099 free hours now! That's 1 1/2 months straight 24/7 internet. If they gave 1 year free and charged $40 a year, I might be interested, as long as they keep all the high end premium features they offer to their wlite high paying customers who are idiots and enjoy being raped sensless in the a**.

AOL stinks.
I can remember trying to join Australia AOL and they once cut me off 'early' around two years ago.
They were having a special offer of a free 3-month dialup internet access when signing up on a new 12-month membership Internet access.
This was for new customers only and for a limited time only.
They removed the 'special offer link' two days earlier than stated on their website and I have to use the phone to sign up.
They did this on purpose so that we miss out.
As I am hearing impaired and I did no further with them.
I joined with an ISP much better than AOL without the need to download and install a special application to access their Internet.
I believe I got to use their browser to access and I didn’t want to download and install anything extra just have the Internet.
Thank goodness and thank graciously not with AOL.
Anyway, I do sometimes get special email promos on Internet access from Netscape.
I can’t use their special offer as I am in Australia.I am a computer and movie addict -
