My heatsink fan died like two weeks ago, and that's why I haven't been on the forums much lately. But anyway, I took this downtime of my PC to get me a new full tower case with enough drive bays for all of the hardrives my RAID motherboard can hold...
I have a bunch of power cable Y splitters for when I run out of power cables for devices...
I have used these for quite a while in my current case without anything out of the ordinary happening or problems. Why don't you just buy a Y splitter cable to supply power to the hardrive? Or have you thought of this, but you know that your power supply will explode if you do this too much or something? Hehe... I plan on like splitting a bunch of them to have all 8 EIDE devices pluged in at once with one power supply... is this a wise idea, or am I going to set the house ablaze?

  4. 8 IDE Devices!?! Damn

All I have is my DVD Drive

    Extra CD Drive

  5. U still have the hard drive?
    Quote Quote
  6. Yes, I still have the drive, but it is a Maxtor, I thought I has unplugged the WD, but it is a 81.9gig DiamondMax, The other question--I have full tower case, dvd, cdrw, NewEQ, 1-60gig maxtor main drive, 4-80gig raid/storage, NOT ENOUGH POWER, Im happy with the room I have, so this drive is not needed, I work in a computer store, so I get good deals on hardware.

  9. If it were a 60 gig Maxtor 7200 RPM drive I'd definitely be interested, because
I need another one for a RAID-0 setup I'm working on.

Hmmm, would it be an idea for VCDHelp to have a want ads section?

  10. I think you may have something there Informer.Want Ads.Yeah that'd be cool.Lets say I have a hard drive or I need a cd burner, and say Joe wants to sell the burner and posts up in the want ads.Thats great.

    VCDHelp People,how bout it?

TIbrO, what is the PSU rated at in your new case? 400W, 450W...?
I dont know how much power 8 devices would use, but my guess is that you are gonna need some hefty mofo PSU for it to be able to cope.
Dont worry though, if the load is too much, you PC wont even get past the boot stage and shut down.

  15. You think 8 IDE devices is crazy? http://www.servercases.com/ImageFiles/SC0210.html <--- I have the black one...will put in 9 IDE HDD, PLUS DVD-ROM, CD-RW, and maybe a DVD-R drive (not to mention it'll be part of a dual p3 tualatin file server)...all powered by an Enermax 530 watt (650 watt peak) PSU! I'll let ya know if I need my own nuclear power plant for this one

Crap... the one that the case comes with which I ordered is only 300W like my current one is. I am planning on using 4 RAID drives Internal Zip 100 I've had for a while unused, CD Burner, and DVDROM. I might fill up the extra device space for like another HDD or a second burner, but who knows...

So what kind of wattage do I need for these here 8 devices? When my case comes, I won't have all eight devices ready to put in. Only 7...

    5.25 Live!Drive
    5.25 DVDROM
    5.25 CDROM

    3.50 Floppy Drive
    3.50 Internal Zip 100
    3.50 IBMDT hdd
    3.50 IBMDT hdd
    3.50 IBMDT hdd
    3.50 WD hdd

That's what I needed atleast from the new case, and I got it. Floppy and Live!Drive are not IDE devices, though, so that's why I say seven.

Oh, did I mention I am going to have lots of fans, too?
So I am looking at needing like two power supplies or something, eh? I think this full tower case I ordered has room for two power supplies or something. How does that work, anyway? Having two power supplies powering one motherboard's worth of stuff?

    jmiller,
    Zikes!
Dude, better rip the radiator and fan out of your car and install it in there too - keep things cool.

Have any of you multi-HDD freaks thought about investing in a MO drive?

  19. Pardon my stupidity, but MO stands for Magneto Optical, correct? What's the MTBF on those?

  20. Forgot...TIbrO, look on all the devices you're installing...they should give the power consumed on the label. You don't necessarily need dual power supply...the 530 watt one i'll be ordering is $179 (from crazypc.com), should have enuf power to power all the drives and fans for my dual p3 file server.
FYI, I do plan on water cooling that box...will have 2 12"x5" radiators with 2 fans pushing air and 2 fans pulling air on each radiator. Combined with enuf fans to make the case hover, it should run cool (at least that's the idea...). Like I said, I'll let ya know if I need my own nuclear power plant for it

Do you plan on overclocking it?

  22. At first, no...it's a possibility later on...tho I really don't know why I'd wanna since it's to be a file server...
