  1. Hi there. I want to get a small tv for my master bedroom. I am lacking in space in there, so I was thinking of paying a bit more and getting an LCD tv to help preserve space. I started looking around and they are quite expensive. Most of them are HD so the price skyrockets with that. Some are not HD but they are still quite a bit of money. So I started looking at LCD monitors, just to see what the difference was. One difference is $$$ for the same size lcd monitor to lcd tv (non HD) we are talking about a 30% to 50% increase in price for the 'tv'! I couldnt believe it really.

SO, i was wondering if i were to buy an LCD monitor, what features would I look for to hook up a dvd player. I doubt I could connect cable to it, which is no big deal since i dont watch it anyway!

I assume for dvd connectivity i am looking for an s-video input, but what about sound. Do these monitors normally have sound or even inputs for sound? Also, if I cant find one with s-video in, is there a converter cable? ie s-vid to dvi or d-sub?

    Thanks.

The reason LCD computer monitors are cheaper is that they don't have any of the circuitry to display TV. You would need a computer, graphics card, audio card to use it for a TV. And most likely the picture would not be a good as a standard TV. Some monitors have speakers, but no amplifier.

There are LCD TVs, and combo LCD monitors/TV, but as you have found, they are expensive.

You would be better off getting an inexpensive CRT TV and sparing yourself the trouble.

I agree with redwudz. It won't look as good. LCD monitors are progressive anyways. TVs are interlaced.

By the time you got the necessary equipment to output TV material to the monitor, it'd be more expensive than just buying an LCD TV.

  4. ahh, it never crossed my mind about the progressive/interlaced issue. Well it was worth the thought I guess.
