  1. Hi All -
Been awhile since I've visited, but am having a weird problem with Mac's latest OS update. I've installed combo update 10.3.6.
Now when I insert a dvd disc made with Toast 6.7 Titanium, my iBook dvd player will not recognize dvd at all. I get an error code 0x80020043B and dvd won't even mount in finder.
This same dvd will work in my G4 fine with no problems, dvd player launches automatically. Note I have not updated to 10.3.6 OS system on my G4 only my iBook.
I'm thinking there is something up with the new Mac 10.3.6 OS syetem update.
    Anyone else experiencing this?

To test my iBook even further, a disc made with Toast 5.0 Titanium is recognized with no problems in my iBook.
At the moment, only dvds created in Toast 5.0 is recognized by the iBook. Original (not burned) DVDs are also recognized.
Toast 6.7 Titanium homemade DVD's are recognized by my G4 which still has previous OS system 10.3.5

Any ideas. I'm also going to poke around at Roxio's forum
    Thanks,
    Brian

That's novel. You're the first I've heard of with this issue.

Is there any other difference between the Toast 6-burned DVDs and the Toast 5 burned ones? For example, is the media in any way different?

When I updated my G4 iBook to 10.3.6 I checked Get Info on DVD Player and there was no change at all; not even to the modified date. That surprised me because the Read Me for the update said there were DVD Player changes.

Then I updated to 10.3.6 on my external Firewire drive and on that one the Get Info for DVD Player changed to the date I did the update. I examined the contents and found an updated file inside.

So blah, blah. I suggest downloading the 10.3.6 combined system updater and reapplying the 10.3.6 update. It may fix the problem your system is having recognizing those DVDs. Also, this sounds like a good time to use DiskWarrior.

  3. 10.3.6 seems to be bad juju on several fronts, not the least of which are DVD Player, certain FireWire drives (ones inside enclosures with the Initio bridge chipset seem to be particularly impacted) and the Pioneer DVR-108 burner.

I am leaving my home PowerBook at 10.3.5 (with 3 FireWire drives *and* a FireWire-connected DVR-108) until this mess gets sorted out. You might try reverting to 10.3.5 (yes, painful I know) and see if everything fixes itself.

    here's an idea from macfixit.com:

I was able to fix the -70012 problem (and blocky artifact problem) [Mar. 17] I was experiencing with a stock DVD drive moved to an the external FW enclosure by reinstalling DVD Player 4.0 from the 10.3 CD. Instructions are below:
    Download and install Pacifist.

Insert Mac OS 10.3 CD in drive.

Select Open Mac OS X Install Packages button in Pacifist. It will ask you to swap out all three 10.3 install disks.

Click the Find button and type "DVD". A long list should show up.

The important files/folders to replace are:
    -AppleAltiVecDVDDriver.bundle
-ATIRadeon8500DVDDriver (if graphics card is installed)
-ATIRadeon9700DVDDriver (if graphics card is installed)
    -ATIRadeonDVDDriver.bundle
-ATIRage128DVDDriver.bundle (if graphics card is installed)
    -DVDPlayback.framework
    -DVD.framework
    -rtadvd
**There are many duplicates of the files/folders above in other languages. I only chose to install English.

Select each or all and click Install.

Choose to replace all existing files.

    Restart. Repair permissions.

Your (external) DVD player should be back and be operational -- without blocky artifacts, too
could be that one of the .framework files is out of wack?
although this happening ( chang's problem) was related
to changes made in 10.3.3 from 10.3, something similar
could be happening with changes in 10.3.6 with 10.3.5
    with DVD Player.

What gets my attention here is the failure of the Toast 6-burned disc to even mount although other burned DVDs do mount and the Toast 6-burned DVD plays on DVD players. I'm confused how an error message appeared with DVD Player when the DVD doesn't mount in the first place. What could be keeping Apple's UDF reader from recognizing and mounting this DVD when it recognizes others burned with Toast 5?

It's gottta be something in the Playback.framework
component that changed Frobozz, is all I can think of.

I'll see if I have time to do some tests this week
    with a G4 and an internal -105.
