    I had a Maxtor 200 gb hard drive that was failing after only 3 months. To my the replacement hard drive is a 250 gb one which makes me happy. Is it normal that the back of the new replacement drive it says, "REFURBISHED TO MAXTOR SPECIFICATIONS"? I heard in the computer industry that was a standard with warranty replacements.

    Most times you won't get a brand new drive as a warranty replacement. Even if they repaired your old drive you'd be in the same boat. At least you got an upgrade. :P

    I sent a Maxtor 60G in for replacement a couple of years ago and they sent me an 80G. Only problem, it was part of a RAID0 setup and the extra 20G wouldn't show. I went ahead and bought another 80G to match.

    I've always had good service from Maxtor. If you prepay for the new drive and it is indeed dead, they don't charge you and you receive the replacement drive in less than a week, once within 2 days. They will usu sally send you a refurbished drive, though I've never had any of the refurbished drives fail, a couple of the new ones did. Still no worse than other brands.

  5. I work for a disk storage systems MFG and I can assure you -- the refurb drives are actually tested more thoroughly than the new ones.

    I wouldn't worry about it and just be greatful for a free 50GB.

    I sure am grateful for the extra 50gbs, the more the merrier! Thanks for the reply and the heads up regarding the testing on refurbished drives.
