  1. I'm just getting started in this hobby and have read a considerable amount. I'm attempting to convert OOP Laserdiscs to DVD. I'm ending up with a file that is too large to fit on a DVD disc. The LD I'm working on now contains 100 minutes of information. Here are the steps I've taken, please let me know where I've done something incorrect (or correct for that matter):
    1. Capture LD video and audio as .avi using virtualdub (one .avi for each side)
    2. Combine both .avi files using tmpgenc xpress
    3. Convert audio to .ac3 using ffmpegGUI
    4. Convert video to .mpg using tmpgenc xpress

Here' where I cannot seem to get this right:
    5. Using DVD Builder from Roxio, add the resultant .mpg from above and the .ac3 file; DVD Builder indicates the file is too large to fit on one DVD.

    Any assistance is genuinely appreciated.

Lower the bitrate in your conversion of avi to mpeg. Use a bitrate calculator to determine what you should use. For 100 minutes of video, I'd suspect it should be somewhere around 6000 kbps.

    Hello,

Just author the dvd onto the harddrive. Then use dvdshrink to make the video_ts folder fit the size of a dvdr.

You will lose some quality because your shrinking it but it shouldn't be that noticeable. You can also use deep analysis in shrink if you want (though it will add to the transcoding time).

ROXIO may be trying to re-encode.

Re-encoding generally produces inferior results. Always avoid re-encoding with apps like Roxio or Shrink if you can. Better to just encode to the correct bitrate.

At this point you need to select the correct bitrate so that it will fit on a disk. Use the Video Help bitrate calculator. Then author with a program that accepts AC3 like TMPGEnc DVD Author.
