  1. I have several DVD-r items that I authored on 8x Sony and 8x Memorex media with my Plextor PX-712A. I burned these at 4x when I made my master copies. Later, when I went to make a copy from a few of these disks, the Plextor was unable to read some files on these DVDs. My stand-alone DVD player seems to play them fine, so it seems odd that the drive that created them cannot read them. Is this a symptom of burning too fast? Or is it my choice of media? From looking over the list of recommended media at the Plextor site, I see that Sony and Memorex are not highly recommended.

    Anyone else run into this?

    Thanks for any suggestions.

The Plextor seems to randomly have difficulty playing these DVD's. At times it will have difficulty recognizing these disks. Sometimes, taking the disk out and putting it back in results in correct playback all the way through. Other times is will struggle to even see it. No problems with other stuff I have done on the same media, and of course no problem playing commercial DVD content.

    Thanks,

It's sad but true that Plextor doesn't support all brands of dvd media. What were the exact media codes from the Sony & Memorex? In my experience with my Plextor 708A drive the best dvd media to use is from the RECOMMENDED BRANDS of dvd media that Plextor supports. They have a COMPATIBLITY list too but doesn't necessarily mean they will work with the Plextor drive. It's odd that when I used a 8x SONY DVD-R media code D1 the buffer level in NERO is 87 but when using a TAIYO YUDEN or MAXELL the buffer level is 92. I don't know if that makes such a difference in burning but it is something that I noticed.

It is a known fact that the Plextor drives are not good dvd readers. The Liteon DVD-ROM's are the best readers as well as Pioneer. You could purchase a DVD-ROM as your reader. I would suggest you try using the RECOMMENDED BRANDS of DVD media that Plextor supports. You may also want to check out the Plextor forum at cdfreaks.com. They have loads of information on the 712A drive and people there can also help you with your problem.

The Memorex media was stamped as 8X but "DVD Identifier" shows them to be RitekG05 4x media. The Sony media comes up as SONY04D1 4x media (it actually is stamped as 4x, I thought it too was 8x but was incorrect). The label on the spindle identifies them as Sony DMR47LS2. Not sure if that is the information you requested, but that is what I can see.

    Thanks,

RITEK media will not work well with Plextor drives in my experience. I did use RITEK g04 when I began dvd burning and burned many of them without any problems. But the RITEK quality began to fall so I gave those up.

Use the RECOMMENDED BRANDS of DVD media that Plextor supports and you won't have any problems. RITEK isn't on the RECOMMENDED LIST but on their COMPATIBILE list which doesn't mean it will work on the drive. It may be burned perfectly fine but when you want the files read back on your 712A is where the problem lies for you. Purchase TAIYO YUDEN DVD MEDIA from www.rima.com.
