I have been using virtual dub for a year now converting analogue video then processing on with other programs to mpg2.

Is it possible to to use virtual dub with mpg2 support to then save a process video as mpg2?

It only has save as avi, but is there a way of saving as mg2 without sending it out as avi frames to frame server?

Nope. You can only save as avi in vitrualdub. There are other programs out there that work well for editing mpeg files such as mpegvcr by womble.

Strictly speaking, this is correct. However, you can use virtualdub to framserve your video to anywhere. Basically it streams the video from virtualdub into any MPEG encoder you wish.

From what I've read, YMPEG still requires an MPEG encoder anyway so you should bypass it IMO. I don't see the point in paying $25 for something you can do as good for free, but that's just me.

If you're doing analog capture into AVI, you might want to read this guide. Basically what you do is feed your AVI into VirtualDubMod, make any editing changes, add filters such as noise removal if you wish, and then stream the output into your favorite MPEG encoder. It takes a bit of reading to understand what you're doing but in the end it is brilliant, and will process much quicker than trying to do all these things within your encoding program.
    If in doubt, Google it.

    Thanks for the replies folks.
I am now capturing HDTV and SDTV and at the moment am converting the mgp2 to dvd by 1. editing the mpg2, demuxing, then authoring with ifo edit, making an image then burning. Final test is to see if it plays in a commercial dvd player, not just on the computer.

When the tv stream contains only ac3 audio it gets more tricky.

Finally, I am trying to keep the 16:9 ration of the tv streams, but my analog programs are only letting me do 4:3

I suspect I will have to start searching the commercial programs.

MPEG-VCR is probably the best editor of MPEG files.

You should give it a try.

It will NOT re-encode your MPEG file. Well it often will re-encode a frame or two at your edit points but that doesn't count
