Hello people, ive had a quick search in the for4um and couldnt find a proper answer for this one....
Well basically i have a few DVDs of home films and loads of other video on dvd-r thats ive either done in college or burnt meself!
my sister keeps stealing my copies and copying them for herself and her mates n stuff!
is there anyway to add sum sort of protection to stop nero from copying a dvd-r that ive burnt?
like some sort of authoring software that features software copyright added protection?
i know ulead dvd workshop has a CSS option but u need special extra hardware? a DLT writer if im right. is there no sort of standard software to help the duplication of a disc on a pc using standard software possible?
cheers for everyones help!

This trick will not work for any disc that you distribute for a fee but to stop an amateur from just duplicating a home made dvd just use a hidden menu.
You could set up a main menu that leads to a warning screen that the disc is defective and then jumps back to the main menu but the hidden menu leads you to the real movie file. You can even set up some password remote keys to access your real menus. I haven't tested this myself but there is a guide on the DVDLab site which discusses this process.
If they do a straight dvd to dvd copy they will be trapped in your trick menus. They can still copy your vob's and reauthor the disc but at least your sister will have to go though a lot more trouble to get at your dvd collection.

very nice idea!
only thing is, she can still copy the actual disc itself using nero!
i know that the only program she knows how to use is nero as shes new to pc's and a bit dim too!
love this idea though!
the scratch at the end of the disc idea is the best one i know of so far that will actually work!
im gonna try that one for sure!.. -
Yes she can copy the disc but if your main menu leads to a dull 5 or 10 minute low res documentary captured from tv with chapters every minute she will stop copying your discs pretty quickly thinking that there is nothing of interest on those discs. No motivation and you stop the pilferring. If you decide to scratch your disc, make a backup because a scratch can make a disc skip in your player or worse yet unreadable.
To anyone else who distributes discs for a fee, I wouldn't try the scratch trick or you may get customers asking for a new disc. I know I would. -
hehe
i added my own intro to the discs and stuff so i know if there my own or not, which sorta helps coz i can catch her out!
but still.
i cud add a big picture of my face to the intro screen ey?
naw dont think thats wise!.. -
u could always copyright ur work and threaten her with legal action if she doesnt cease and disist. :P

haha
good idea!!
naw not really too serios about it, just winds me up a little thats all!
wud be a lovely feature to have in authoring software tho!.. -

This isn't standard copy protection either but if you could write some vb code I have another trick to fool your sister.
In a nutshell:
Take a snap shot of the nero screen
Write a small vb program that loads the nero screen image onto the main vb form when it is run.
Sneak onto her computer and have the nero desktop shortcut point to your vb app so that when she thinks she is running nero it's really your lookalike prog.
When you create a dvd insert a file into a secondary folder (not the video_ts).
Your program then checks for the existence of this file on the dvd.
If it is not there then your vb app calls the real Nero and closes itself. If the file is on the disc then a message is displayed saying that nero has detected errors on the disc and cannot continue. After a few seconds the app shuts down and the fake nero screen disappears and she is none the wiser.
I pulled this stunt at work when I wanted to keep people off my pc when I was out. I put an image of my desktop as a fullscreen vb form and trapped all key and mouse move activities. Using layered image and picture boxes, labels and text boxes I had a lot of fun with coworker who said my computer was screwed up. I displayed all kinds of wierd technical nonsense depending on which area of the screen they clicked on.
A side benefit is that it gave me lots of practice with vb. It looked so realistic like my normal desktop that a tech support guy tried to load some software while I was out for lunch one day and he couldn't figure out what was going on. When I walked in, I just distracted him and put in my special key combination which shut down my program and then said innnocently "what's the problem? It works fine. You can have a lot of fun with simple programming.

Just don't give it out. Best way to be 100% sure nobody ever copies it.
