Teen who killed dog guilty of cruelty
Actions of 17-year-old girl prompt calls for stifferpenalties for crimes against animals
Thursday, November 29, 2001
A 17-year-old Etobicoke girl was convicted this week of animal cruelty after she beat and then barbecued her family's Pomeranian.
The horrific case renewed calls from animal rights groups for stiffer animal cruelty penalties under the Criminal Code.
The young offender, who will be sentenced in January, was convicted in criminal court at Toronto's old city hall of two charges of animal cruelty laid in May 2001 after an investigation by the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).
Peel regional police turned over the investigation after discovering the case while investigating a break-and-enter in Mississauga.
Also charged in the case is Youkhana Moshi of Etobicoke. Mr. Moshi didn't show up for his August court appearance, so a new date will be set by the court.
No other details of the case were released and the young offender can't be named, but Toronto newspapers reported this week that the 12-year-old dog, named Peppy, had been a family pet for seven years.
Following her conviction, the Ontario SPCA's director of communications said the current maximum penalties -- six months in jail, a two-year ban on owning pets, and a $2,000 fine -- for such violence are "far too weak."
"We want to see the jail time increased to five years and the ban on owning animals should be lifetime," Jim Pollock said.
"This instance of cruelty is offensive and horrific and we feel the penalties that are accrued for such heinous acts are inadequate."
Michael O'Sullivan, executive director of the Humane Society of Canada, joined the chorus, saying that it's only a matter of time before the people who are this cruel to animals inflict the same pain on humans.
"They need to be helped for their own sake and for society's sake," he said.
"I've heard every excuse in the book for cruelty to animals and I'm sick of it. For acts like this, we need stronger laws and more funding so the cases can be properly investigated."

They can ban you from owning pets?!?!? I didn't know that, how would they enforce something like that anyway?
I don't know what to think about this one...... Kind of sounds like what they do to cows. Kill the cow and then eat the cow. A dog wouldn't be my choice of meat but it wasn't my dog either..... Speaking of cows.... its lunch time..... -
Farmers kill their pet cows and then eat them all the time, should they be banned from being farmers? One meat is the same as any other, with the POSSIBLE exception of human.
All this fuss over a little pomeranian rat-dog.
Isn't "animal cruelty" when an animal is mistreated, and lives to be traumatized by it?
Seems to me, that is she just killed it, it was treated pretty well, all things considered. Unless she cooked it alive, of course.

Cattle aren't beat to death and then BBQ'd, they are shocked or take that 2,000lb beam in the head for a instant death.

Ever seen "faces of Death"?
They show you that a cow is put into a panic and throat is slit so it bleeds to death.
That keeps the meat fresher and isn't gamey. -

I heard this story... (oh no hear he goes...
) that a large cargo plane full of BSE infected cattle was flown to Cambodia. Since the cows were to be executed anyway, some bright spark figured they'd do a pretty good job at mine clearance. So here they all were peacefully grazing away, with nothing to disrupt the tranquility other than Daisy and a few of her pals, taking occaisonal flying lessons in different directions. Which just goes to show that it's not always "A Dogs Life"

that just mean..i love animals the girl should go to $@#! for killing that dog
-
Perhaps the girl is from one of those countries where they eat dogs and it's really just a cultural misunderstanding...
