I have a weird problem with 1 of the 200 gb hard drives I got. Using nortons speed disk I get a error msg telling me to use disk doctor cuz of a bad sector or something. I used windows 2000 pro utility to scan and fix any sectors, it came out clean. nortons Disc doctor didn't find any problems but it won't do a surface scan that's why I used the windows 2000 pro scan disk tool. Then I tried to use speed disk again and get the same error msg. Is the hard drive dying or something? I have no clue what's wrong. My 2 other hard drives defragged fine with speed disk. Any comments or tips will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Did you check for an update to Speed Disk. Version may have limitations with 200G's or OS.

Set Norton Disk Doctor to "fix errors". Win2000 won't let it fix it, but what it does is schedule CHKDSK to run the next reboot. Go ahead and run NDD. It'll stop with a screen saying it'll take care of it on reboot.

Reboot and see if that doesn't clear it up. The actual check only takes a couple of minutes.

I occasionally have errors in the security descriptors. That'll make Speed Disk choke. I follow this procedure and it clears it right up

Thanks for the replies. Capmaster I've already done those steps and still the same error msg from speed disk. My Norton's utilites is updated to the latest. I find it odd because I was able to use speed disk on my 2 other 200 gb hard drives on my other pc without any error mgs, they both defragged ok without any problems. I find it odd that this 1 200 gb hd gives me error msg using speed disk. The CHKDSK ran fine with no errors and so did Norton Disk Doctor. When speed disk is shown I see 2 RED blocks in the scan which I believe is UNMOVABLE files which I didn't see with my 2 other hd's. Would that be a factor in speed disk no working properly? Any other suggestions or comments will be appreciated. Thanks!

P.S. Capster I know you don't care for MAXTOR hd's but that's the brand I have on all my pc's. I hope this 1 200 gb hd isn't dying or something!
