OK...I'm pretty computer stupid....don't laugh.
I noticed you guys did some interesting detective work during the TeeGee thread. Does that mean you can track ME as well? Can you tell where in the world I am sending this message from?
Just curious....I'd like to know how close such tracking methods can get to my actual city, country.....whatever.

Hello,
I think I remember reading they could get a country and maybe a state/province. I don't think it goes farther than that. Although I wouldn't be suprised if they could narrow it down to city.

go here:
http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm?GetLocation
and enter your IP address (if it's not already entered for you...) and see what it says
looks like it's possible to narrow down to a city...or at least a geographic location.

I would love to get ping check or what ever they do from the cable or dsl companies I could get their address from norton or macF..( I cant recall, many years ago) . with their tracking monotoring...then I would get thier fax # and send them the print out 10, 000 times just in case they missed the first one

They track it to the isp and that is it.
It said my location was Denton and I don't live in Denton -
actually once I tracked myself and it was pretty acurrate it did not get my address of course but it did get the city where the main (Big) server was ...but it was about 500 miles away from where I was

yeah from home I grab my desktop and move it from state to state from country to country every once and again ...

Usually it only tracks it to your isp and only your isp upon court order can reveal you.
That is why the music cases are so important.
The industry is trying to force the isp's to hand over the identities of their customers.
It was ruled the isp's did not have to hand over that info. -

I've had a few ISPs over the years, and two were very small local providers that could track me as close as where I was.
I learned a lot more about this way back when I first started using IRC.
An obsessed mod on the channel would tell me exactly where I was...and I started feeling violated, so I tried using a toll dialup number from a location further away to see if that made a difference. It helped with not being able to track me but didn't help my phone bill
If you have your own website, all your personal info can be looked up by anyone - name, address, phone # (unless you use bogus info to sign up with a host or request your info be kept private...which isn't always kept private anyway)
Spyware and hacks can obtain all kinds of info that you may not even be aware of....your computer's serial number, serial numbers of all your software, any passwords or credit card info you keep stored (sometimes doesn't matter if it's stored or not), etc -
